Overview The Reading Teacher / Media Specialist Designee at Odyssey Charter School, Inc. plays a key role in fostering a culture of literacy and supporting student achievement through reading instruction, literature appreciation, and media center services. This position collaborates with school leadership, teachers, and media personnel to promote reading engagement and provide access to high-quality instructional and recreational resources. The ideal candidate is a certified teacher with a strong passion for literacy, children's and young adult literature, and student learning. The candidate should be willing to pursue Florida Educational Media Specialist certification while serving in the role. This position supports students and teachers by promoting reading proficiency, encouraging inquiry and lifelong learning, assisting with media center operations, and helping ensure resources align with the school's state-adopted curriculum. About Our Schools Founded in 1999, Odyssey Charter School (K-12) and Odyssey Preparatory Academy (K-5) are Cognia-accredited public charter schools serving approximately 2,400 students from Preschool through Grade 12 across two campuses on Florida's Space Coast. Fosters and promotes the school's mission, vision, and philosophy.
Provides reading instruction, interventions, and literacy support to students as assigned.
Promotes a school-wide culture of reading and literacy.
Collaborates with teachers and administrators to support literacy initiatives and classroom instruction.
Assists in the selection and evaluation of high-quality literature and instructional resources.
Supports the organization and maintenance of the school media center.
Helps curate a diverse collection of books and resources that reflect student interests and curriculum needs.
Assists students and staff in locating and utilizing media resources.
Promotes student engagement through reading programs, book clubs, literacy events, and author studies.
Supports research and information literacy activities.
Maintains inventory records and assists with cataloging and circulation procedures.
Serves as a resource to faculty regarding available literature and instructional materials.
Assists with budgeting and acquisition of books and media resources.
Collaborates with school leaders to develop and enhance media center services.
Uses instructional strategies that promote critical thinking, creativity, and student engagement.
Complies with all federal, state, and school regulations, policies, and procedures.
Pursues Educational Media Specialist certification within a mutually agreed-upon timeframe.
Assists with fundraising efforts as requested by the principal.
Performs other duties as assigned by the principal. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong knowledge of reading instruction and literacy development.
Passion for children's and young adult literature.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to promote reading engagement among diverse learners.
Computer literate with proficiency in educational technology and software platforms used by the school.
Ability to organize and manage books, materials, and educational resources.
Effective time management and organizational skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and families.
Interest in developing expertise in school media services and library management. Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Education or related field required.
Valid Florida Teaching Certificate.
Reading endorsement or Reading Certification preferred.
Minimum three years of successful teaching experience preferred.
Previous experience working in a media center or library setting. Physical Requirements
Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
Requires working in both a classroom and media center environment.
Occasionally requires physical exertion to move, lift, carry, pull, or push materials and books.
Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching.
Hearing and visual acuity at normal levels. Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $52,000-$68,000
