PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Provide individualized support to a student receiving special education services in accordance with the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and under the direction of certified staff. Assist with the student's instructional, behavioral, functional, physical, communication, and/or personal care needs, as applicable, to promote access, participation, safety, and independence within the educational environment. When the assigned student is absent, does not require one-to-one assistance, or is otherwise not in need of direct support, assist with other appropriate instructional, supervisory, clerical, or campus operational duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification Must have one of the following:
48 hours of college credit; or
Associate's Degree or higher; or
High school diploma/GED and meet requirements for paraprofessional
certification. Complete district-required training applicable to the needs of the assigned student and position. Special Knowledge/Skills
Ability to work effectively with students.
Ability to follow and implement teacher-developed instructional plans, IEP Copperas Cove Independent School District
requirements, behavior supports, safety procedures, and other student-specific
plans.
Ability to assist with academic, functional, behavioral, physical, communication,
and personal care needs, as applicable.
Ability to collect and accurately document student data as directed.
Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators,
related service personnel, and other staff.
Ability to maintain student confidentiality.
Ability to encourage student independence while providing assistance necessary
for the student to participate in the educational environment safely and successfully.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Individual Student Support
Provide one-to-one support to the assigned student in accordance with the student's IEP and other applicable student-specific plans.
Assist the student with instructional activities and reinforce concepts and skills
identified by certified staff.
Support the student's participation and access across educational settings and
school activities as determined by the student's IEP and campus schedule.
Implement accommodations, modifications, behavioral supports, communication
supports, and other strategies as directed by certified staff.
Assist with physical, mobility, positioning, feeding, toileting, hygiene, or other
personal care needs when required by the student's individual needs and
assigned duties.
Assist with implementation of behavior intervention and safety procedures, including district-approved crisis intervention procedures when applicable to the assigned student and position.
Collect and document data related to student performance, behavior, IEP goals, services, or other areas as directed by certified staff.
Communicate relevant information regarding the student's progress, needs, behavior, health, or safety to the supervising teacher and appropriate campus personnel.
Promote student independence by appropriately fading prompts and assistance Copperas Cove Independent School District when the student is able to participate or perform tasks with less adult support.
Maintain confidentiality of student information and comply with applicable federal and state requirements, district policy, and special education procedures.
Assist in supervising the student throughout the school day, including classrooms, hallways, lunchroom, arrival/dismissal, playground, bus areas, and other school settings as assigned.
Assist teachers with instructional materials, classroom activities, equipment, records, and other routine classroom responsibilities associated with the assigned student.
When the assigned student is absent or does not require direct one-to-one assistance, perform other appropriate instructional, supervisory, clerical, or campus operational duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
Participate in staff development, team meetings, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Tools/Equipment Used:
Standard office and instructional equipment; adaptive, mobility, communication, positioning, or other specialized equipment as applicable to student needs.
Posture/Motion:
Frequent standing and walking; may include bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, pulling, and assisting students with mobility or positioning.
Lifting:
May require lifting, transferring, or physically assisting students in accordance with the assigned students' needs and district procedures.
Environment:
Work inside and outside; exposure to noise, inclement weather, and possible biological hazards associated with providing student care.
Mental Demands:
Work with frequent interruptions; follow established student plans and schedules; maintain confidentiality; exercise sound judgment; and maintain emotional control under stressful or potentially volatile situations.
