Job Description

ESOL Teacher for adults in Glyndon, MD
  • Start September 2026, per semester, independent contractor
  • $3000 contract
  • 10-week, 60-hour semester (20 classes, 3-hr class): paid 7 hours per week teaching (3.5 hrs per class includes 15 min pre
  • & 15 min post-class time); also paid 2 hours per week lesson prep, 3-hrs pre

  • mid-service meetings, 3-hr registration, 4-hr pre-course curriculum planning
  • Tuesday & Thursday evening, 5:45-9:15 pm; course dates: 9/29-12/3; registration 9/22; pre-service meeting week of 9/14, mid-semester meeting week of 10/12, debrief mtg week of 12/14

SUMMARY:
This position will provide educational instruction in a classroom setting of students at an offsite location. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing lesson plans, using an online curriculum, to meet the ESOL needs of the students in the program. Duties generally include student assessment, classroom management, and oversight of one classroom assistants.
JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and implement lesson plans to meet established guidelines and students' needs; document attendance and behavior issues, and provide regular feedback to program staff Effectively utilize curriculum guidelines, knowledge of ESOL methodology, and technology Create a safe, inclusive, and fun learning environment Submit lesson plans for each week by COB (close-of-business) of the Thursday prior Establish behavioral limits and maintain order within classroom environment Take daily attendance Assess student's language skills and fluency through administration of testing and/ or documentation Facilitate completion of all evaluations and surveys; make program announcements Attend trainings and meetings as required Direct classroom assistants within the classroom Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills with staff (including volunteers) and students as necessary. Assist as needed in other administrative tasks of classroom preparation including setup and breakdown of classroom/meeting areas Model positive behavior Ability to perform other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree required; teaching certification in TESOL or commensurate experience required 1 to 2 years of experience working with immigrant adults required Must be fluent in English; proficiency in other language(s) desirable
SKILLS / COMPETENCIES
Ability to communicate with people of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds respectfully and accurately Must be able to interact patiently and respectfully with students, families, volunteers, and staff Must work well independently and as part of a team (including classroom assistants, volunteers, and staff) Must have serious interest in TESOL and the immigrant population Must be reliable and punctual Ability to work independently Must have computer skills (including use of email, Google Drive, and Microsoft Office) and be able to maintain regular communication with Educational Services Coordinator via email and phone Understanding of immigrant communities is desirable

Must have the visual, physical, and hearing acuity to perform job duties Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds Must pass a background check
