Makers in Training is a Brownsville learning center that has been working with local families since 2018. Our Homework Help program runs weekday afternoons: students drop in between 4 and 7 PM, and a tutor sits down with them and works through whatever they brought — math, science, English essays, projects, test prep. We're hiring tutors for the fall semester. If you're a college student studying math, science, or education — or a strong high school junior/senior who's good at explaining things — this is a great fit. It's real teaching experience, it looks excellent on a résumé or a teaching-program application, and the hours are built around class schedules. What you'll do Work one-on-one and in small groups with K-12 students on their daily homework Help students with math, science, essays, reading comprehension, and school projects Prepare students for upcoming tests and quizzes Keep the room focused and encouraging; check in with parents at pickup when needed Occasionally support our week-long summer math camps (extra hours, if you are available) What we're looking for Big plus if you have solid command of math through at least Algebra I (higher is better) You can explain a concept, patience matters more than credentials here Reliable, students and parents count on you being there Comfortable working with kids and teenagers High school junior/senior standing or above Spanish is a plus — many of our parents prefer to talk in Spanish Nice to have Currently enrolled at UTRGV or Texas Southmost College Majoring in math, engineering, science, or education Experience coaching, camp counseling, or peer tutoring Strong SAT/ACT scores (we also run a test prep program) Why work here Hours that fit around class. Afternoons only, done by 7 PM on most days, no weekends. Small team, real responsibility. You're not shuffling papers — you're the reason a kid passes their algebra test. Résumé-grade experience.
