Job Description

Performs responsible part-time work serving as an official scorekeeper for McDowell County Parks and Recreation athletic programs and sporting events. Records and maintains accurate game statistics, scores, player information, and other official game information in accordance with established league rules and Parks and Recreation procedures. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Athletic Coordinator, Recreation Program Supervisor, or designated official. Operates and maintains the official scoreboard during assigned athletic games and events. Accurately records game scores, player statistics, fouls, timeouts, substitutions, innings, periods, quarters, or other applicable game information. Maintains official scorebooks, score sheets, electronic scoring systems, or other required records. Works closely with referees, umpires, coaches, athletic staff, and other game officials to ensure accurate and timely recording of game information. Follows established rules and procedures for the sport being scored. Communicates game information clearly and professionally to officials and Parks and Recreation staff. Keeps accurate track of game time, including starting, stopping, and resetting clocks as directed by game officials. Operates scoreboard and other equipment associated with assigned athletic events. Reports discrepancies or problems with scores, equipment, player information, or game records to the appropriate Parks and Recreation staff member. Maintains confidentiality and professionalism when handling player, team, or league information. Assists with maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive environment during athletic events. Arrives at assigned facilities in sufficient time to prepare equipment and review game information before the scheduled start time. Remains attentive throughout assigned games and performs duties without unnecessary distractions. Completes required paperwork, time records, and other documentation accurately and timely. Assists with other Parks and Recreation activities or duties as assigned. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Previous experience with organized sports, scorekeeping, officiating, athletics, or recreation programs preferred. Must have sufficient knowledge of the rules of the sport for which the individual is assigned to score. Must be able to successfully complete any required Parks and Recreation training.
Note:
Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered. Physical Requirements Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, and use hands and fingers to operate scoring equipment and related technology. Must have the ability to remain seated or standing and attentive for extended periods during athletic events. Must be able to hear and communicate with game officials and Parks and Recreation staff in an active athletic environment. Working Conditions Work is primarily performed in gymnasiums, athletic fields, recreation facilities, and other Parks and Recreation athletic venues. Work may occur indoors or outdoors and may involve exposure to varying temperatures, noise, crowds, and weather conditions. Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required depending upon athletic program schedules. The position requires a flexible schedule based upon scheduled games, tournaments, leagues, and Parks and Recreation activities. Special Requirements Must be dependable and available to work assigned games and events. Must report to assigned locations on time and prepared to perform scoring duties. Must maintain professional conduct while representing McDowell County Parks and Recreation. May be required to complete a background check or other screening in accordance with McDowell County policies and applicable requirements. Must comply with all McDowell County Government and Parks and Recreation Department policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
