Under the direction of the Zoo Education Manager, assist in the stewardship of the Miller Park Zoo Education department, supporting the Zoo's mission and core values. This list may not include all tasks and/or knowledge which may be expected of the employee, nor does it cover all specific duties which may be required. Other duties may be assigned. Plans, organizes, and presents various education programs for Miller Park Zoo (MPZ) visitors, regional schools, and community interest groups both on- and off-grounds. Develops and delivers conservation-based curriculum to groups varying in numbers, ages, and abilities. This includes school camps and classes, ZooToYou outreach programming, and the well-established Junior Zookeeper program summer camps and schoolyear classes. Assist with planning and messaging regarding appropriate animal ambassador handling at events. Handle ambassador animals while delivering formal and informal presentations. Participate with PR team for interviews, tours, media requests and guest experiences as needed. Perform all Zoo Education Rec Instructor duties as trained to maintain high standards of animal care and welfare. Maintain familiarity with animal handling, class instruction, and individual animal behavior. Provide feedback regarding protocols, procedures, and SOPs. Observe animals to determine their physical, psychological, and social well-being; report same to the animal's primary zookeeper(s) and Zoo Education Manager. Maintain areas in compliance with USDA and AZA standards, reporting potential non-compliance issues. Ensure proper records are maintained, including but not limited to: ZIMS, daily logs, Training records, Enrichment logs. Assist the Zoo Education Manager in daily and administrative tasks. Research, develop, and implement species- and individual-specific Operant Conditioning (Training) and Enrichment programs specific to handling and presentation for educational programming. Aid in reviewing assessments and developing improvement and action plans to constantly improve animal welfare. Adhere to and support all zoo policies and procedures. Exceptional communication skills with people of all ages. Ability to effectively teach conservation and biological themes to a wide range of audiences. Willingness and ability to handle a wide variety of animals. Good-natured ability to supervise children. Self-motivated and outgoing with strong public speaking skills. Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills to develop/implement solution-based plans/goals. Communicate effectively orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, peers, supervisors, and visitors. Use word processing, spreadsheet, internet, e-mail software, and other applications as needed for appropriate communication and record-keeping. Train and direct interns, volunteers, and new staff. Exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions. Understand and accurately observe, assess, and record animal behavior; monitor and provide for excellent animal wellbeing. Demonstrate flexibility in thought and actions, ensuring a progressive, dynamic work environment. Always maintain a professional attitude while representing the Miller Park Zoo. Provide excellent guest service and experiences. Embody DEIA principles described in MPZ and City policies.

Preferred Education/Experience:

Required:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:

Animal handling experience Degree or experience in education or zoo-related field Experience in staff/volunteer leadership, as well as Animal Ambassador handling and/or care

Certificate or Licenses:

Driver's License First Aid/CPR/AED certification preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Work is performed both in an office environment and in an outdoor setting. Must be able to work in all conditions including hot, cold, wet and dry weather.
