Pattern Making/CAD & Tooling Technician- What You'll Do:
The Pattern Making / CAD & Tooling Technician provides hands-on technical, design, and production support for Pattern Making, Engineering, Tooling, and Manufacturing. The role converts customer drawings, models, specifications, and manufacturing requirements into accurate, manufacturable patterns, molds, tooling, fixtures, prototypes, and production aids using CAD/CAM software, CNC equipment, rapid prototyping, routing equipment, and traditional pattern-making methods. This position combines CAD/CAM modeling and CNC programming with practical pattern and tooling fabrication, dimensional inspection, troubleshooting, and production support. The Technician is expected to understand how tooling decisions affect downstream manufacturing and to deliver safe, accurate, efficient work in alignment with production schedules, quality requirements, Item Master standards, and company procedures. Key Responsibilities Provide technical assistance, work direction, and training to other employees as needed, and perform all work in accordance with company safety, environmental, quality, policies, procedures, and work instructions. Perform routine equipment checks and basic preventive maintenance; support material, tooling, and inventory activities and assist in other production areas or special projects as business needs require. Assist with estimates and customer quotation information by evaluating drawings, anticipated materials, manufacturing methods, tooling requirements, and expected labor requirements when requested. Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, cost, workflow, manufacturability, delivery, and 5S. Follow established production priorities and schedules, identify constraints early, and communicate schedule, quality, tooling, or technical risks to Leadership with practical solutions or alternatives. Review manufacturing orders, actual production times, and related results; maintain accurate CNC programs, models, drawings, production and inspection records, and recommend or complete Item Master updates when appropriate. Troubleshoot pattern, tooling, mold, machining, dimensional, and manufacturability issues; support root-cause analysis and corrective actions to minimize production interruptions, rework, and scrap. Perform dimensional inspection using calipers, micrometers, angle finders, gauges, CMM equipment, and other inspection devices; verify completed work against drawings, specifications, and quality requirements. Fabricate, assemble, modify, repair, and finish patterns, tooling, molds, prototypes, plaster tooling, and disposable tooling. Develop CNC programs and machine setups; operate CNC routers, four-axis routing equipment, rapid prototyping equipment, Croma equipment, and other tooling-production equipment as required. Interpret customer drawings, models, blueprints, dimensions, tolerances, specifications, and manufacturing requirements; evaluate manufacturability including geometry, material selection, parting lines, machining requirements, allowances, shrink considerations, assembly needs, and downstream process requirements. Create and modify 2D and 3D models, patterns, tooling, molds, fixtures, and production aids using SolidWorks, RhinoCAM, or other applicable CAD/CAM systems. Qualifications & Capabilities:
Minimum 2-year degree or equivalent experience required; technical education in CAD, drafting, CNC machining, manufacturing technology, pattern making, machining, or a related field preferred. One or more years of related manufacturing, pattern making, tooling, CAD/CAM, CNC, machining, or equivalent experience preferred. Working knowledge of 3D drafting and modeling required; SolidWorks strongly preferred. RhinoCAM or similar CAM software experience preferred. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, dimensions, tolerances, and manufacturing specifications. Working knowledge of pattern-making and tooling concepts, CNC equipment, machining principles, routers, rapid prototyping equipment, quality systems, inspection requirements, and process control principles. Strong dimensional measurement skills and mechanical aptitude, including practical troubleshooting and problem-solving ability. Ability to work independently with limited supervision, manage changing priorities, recognize next steps, and escalate issues appropriately. Strong attention to detail, accurate computer/data-entry and recordkeeping skills, and effective communication across Production, Engineering, Quality, and Leadership. Team-oriented approach, willingness to learn new equipment and processes, manual dexterity for tooling work, and demonstrated initiative in continuous improvement; ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Available to work assigned hours and overtime when needed
Tools & Equipment:
Typical tools and equipment include CAD/CAM workstations; SolidWorks; RhinoCAM or similar CAM software; CNC routers and machining equipment; four-axis routing equipment; rapid prototyping and Croma or similar production equipment; CMM equipment; calipers, micrometers, angle finders, gauges, hand and power tools; pattern-making/material-processing equipment; and authorized material-handling equipment.
Problem Solving & Decision Making:
The Technician identifies, analyzes, and resolves routine and involved technical or production problems related to patterns, tooling, molds, fixtures, CNC machining, dimensions, drawings, and manufacturability. The role requires sound judgment to determine when an issue can be resolved independently and when support from Engineering, Quality, Production Leadership, Management, or another technical resource is needed. The employee is expected to evaluate alternatives, recommend practical solutions, respond to changing priorities, and understand the downstream impact of tooling decisions.
Performance Expectations:
Consistently produce accurate, manufacturable tooling and documentation that meets applicable quality and safety requirements. Meet established production and Item Master productivity expectations while minimizing avoidable rework, scrap, and delays. Communicate risks early, take ownership of assigned work, and demonstrate increasing technical capability and independence.
