Upspect Home Inspections

Structural Engineer (PE) — Founding Principal / Equity Partner

Job Description

A bout the opportunity Upspect is a top-rated Phoenix home inspection company (5 stars, 350+ Google reviews, 100+ inspections/month in season) launching a separately registered structural engineering firm. We already sell engineer's foundation and truss evaluations through an outside partner and turn away structural work weekly. We need a licensed Arizona structural PE to become the firm's principal registrant and founding partner. This is not a staff engineer role. You will be a member of the LLC with full authority over all engineering services, a founding equity stake, and a vesting path to a substantially larger ownership position. What you'll do
  • Review field data collected by our certified inspectors, analyze, and issue sealed reports for residential structural conditions: foundation and stem wall movement, slab cracking, truss and framing damage, drainage-related distress
  • Author and maintain the field data-collection protocol our inspectors follow; conduct calibration site visits as needed
  • Produce structural sheets and calculations for custom homes, additions, and ADUs referred by our architect partners
  • Set the firm's engineering standards, report templates, and QA process
  • Serve as the BTR-registered principal in responsible charge of the firm What we handle for you
  • Client acquisition, marketing, and referral flow (inspection volume + architect relationships)
  • Scheduling, intake, payment collection, and report delivery
  • Formation, BTR firm registration, structural E&O insurance, design software, office space
  • Startup capital, insurance, and software Requirements
  • Active Arizona Professional Engineer registration (structural or civil with structural practice)
  • 5+ years of experience; residential forensic/repair evaluation and/or residential structural design
  • Comfortable writing clear, plain-English findings for homeowners, agents, and contractors
  • Arizona-based; able to perform occasional site visits in Phoenix metro
  • Ability to pass a background check; no BTR disciplinary history Preferred
  • Experience with post-tension slabs, CMU stem walls, and expansive-soil distress patterns
  • Familiarity with Maricopa County and municipal residential permitting
  • RISA, Enercalc, or equivalent
  • NCEES Record (or willingness to establish one) Compensation and equity
  • Production compensation: 50% of engineering revenue you personally produce, paid monthly; no cap
  • Founding equity stake at signing, structured as a profits interest (no tax due at grant), vesting to 35% over 4 years
  • Part-time at launch (10-20 hours/week), scaling to full-time as volume grows
  • Realistic full-time earnings of $150,000
  • 200,000+ once the pipeline supports it
  • Ideal for a semi-retired PE, a sole practitioner seeking deal flow, or an engineer with written employer consent for outside practice
  • Health benefits stipend negotiable How to apply Submit your resume, AZ PE number, and 2-3 sample reports or plan sets (redacted is fine).
Include a short note on why you'd want to own a practice rather than work in one. Upspect LLC is an equal opportunity employer. Engineering services will be performed by the affiliated engineering firm, registered with the Arizona Board of Technical Registration.
