The engineer will work on commercial solar projects from initial site investigation through engineering and construction documentation. Responsibilities will include conducting commercial site surveys, developing electrical and construction blueprints, performing structural load analysis, and assisting with the engineering required to bring solar projects from concept to installation. Responsibilities Conduct on-site surveys of commercial buildings and properties for proposed solar installations. Document existing electrical equipment, service sizes, switchgear, transformers, panels, meters, roof conditions, structural conditions, and other relevant site information. Take field measurements, photographs, and detailed notes required for engineering and design. Develop and revise engineering drawings, blueprints, and construction plan sets for commercial solar projects. Create electrical layouts, equipment layouts, single-line diagrams, conduit and wiring plans, and other project drawings. Assist with electrical calculations including conductor sizing, voltage drop, overcurrent protection, equipment sizing, and system design. Review electrical infrastructure to determine how proposed solar systems will integrate with existing building systems. Perform structural load analysis for rooftop and other solar installations. Evaluate roof structures and proposed solar loading, including dead loads, equipment loads, and other applicable design considerations. Assist with determining whether existing structures can accommodate proposed solar installations and identify areas requiring additional engineering review or reinforcement. Review architectural, structural, and electrical drawings for commercial properties. Prepare drawings and documentation for permitting, utility interconnection, construction, and engineering review. Coordinate with project managers, installers, electricians, contractors, utilities, customers, and other members of the engineering team. Respond to plan review comments and assist with drawing revisions. Learn and apply applicable electrical, building, fire, and structural codes to project designs. Maintain accurate project documentation and engineering records. Visit active construction sites when necessary to verify field conditions and resolve engineering or design questions. Support additional engineering and technical responsibilities as the employee's experience grows. QualificationsRequired Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a closely related accredited engineering discipline. Degree may be in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or another applicable engineering field. An Electrical Engineering degree is not required. Strong mathematical and analytical abilities. Ability and willingness to learn electrical engineering concepts and structural analysis. Ability to read and understand technical drawings and construction documents. Strong attention to detail. Comfortable working both in an office environment and at commercial job sites. Ability to take accurate field measurements and document existing site conditions. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities. Valid driver's license and ability to travel to commercial project sites as required. Preferred, But Not Required AutoCAD experience. Electrical coursework or electrical design experience. Structural engineering coursework or load-analysis experience. Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC). Experience reading electrical single-line diagrams. Experience with commercial construction. Solar or renewable-energy experience. Internship, co-op, or field engineering experience. EIT/FE certification or interest in obtaining it. Candidates are not expected to have all of the preferred qualifications. ARF Solar will provide training in solar design, commercial electrical systems, site surveying, applicable codes, structural analysis, and company engineering procedures. What You Will Learn This position is designed to develop a well-rounded engineer with practical commercial engineering experience.
Training will include:
Commercial solar photovoltaic system design Commercial electrical systems Electrical one-line diagrams NEC requirements and electrical calculations Solar equipment and system components AutoCAD and construction drawing preparation Commercial site surveying Utility interconnection requirements Structural loading and rooftop solar analysis Building and construction documentation Permitting and plan-review processes Field engineering and construction coordination Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a recent engineering graduate who is curious, technically minded, comfortable learning new disciplines, and interested in seeing projects move from a computer design to actual construction . We are more interested in finding someone with a strong engineering foundation, attention to detail, work ethic, and willingness to learn than someone who already has solar experience. This position is especially suited for an engineer who wants exposure to multiple disciplines—including electrical, structural, construction, and renewable-energy engineering —rather than working exclusively in one narrow engineering specialty. Career Growth As experience and capabilities develop, the engineer may take increasing responsibility for: Complete commercial solar design packages Electrical system design Structural analysis Engineering calculations Utility coordination Permitting Project engineering Construction support Customer and contractor coordination Engineering review and quality control Larger and more complex commercial projects ARF Solar is looking for someone who can grow with the company and develop into a key member of our engineering and project-development team.
