Job Description

About us The Center's mission is to provide a permanent sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees who have been rescued or retired from the entertainment industry, from research, from the exotic pet trade, or from other situations where great apes need rescue and lifetime care. The Center will provide care with dignity in a safe, healthy, and enriching environment for all sanctuary residents. As the only accredited orangutan sanctuary in the country and one of a handful of accredited chimpanzee sanctuaries, the Center for Great Apes has been rescuing great apes for 30 years. Perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance, repair or Center operations.
Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to: Perform electrical repairs, including lights and laundry appliances. Ensure mechanical equipment is in working order and fixed as necessary. Analyze appliances to detect any problems and repair them as necessary. Complete general building maintenance as needed. Install and replace floors, stairs, and piping as needed. Repair doors, windows, walls, ceilings, roofs, and other parts of buildings. Maintain and repair air conditioning and heating systems as required.
Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent or equivalent experience. Ability to safely use standard power and hand tools. HVAC knowledge and repair skills a plus. Experience installing and replacing plumbing systems. Self-starter with good time management skills Have a philosophy of animal care and respect that blends with the Center's mission. Willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and holidays Strong written and verbal communication skills. Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary. Able to establish and maintain effective and professional working relations with co-workers and other department personnel and to do so in accordance with The Center for Great Apes Employee Handbook. Be able to lift 75 pounds and carry for a short distance routinely. Be able to work outdoors in inclement weather, including rain, heat, and humidity. Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time. Ability to crouch, kneel, and reach overhead (frequently)
