JOB SUMMARY
The Environmental Project Engineer supports planning, design, permitting, and compliance activities for wastewater, stormwater, EGLE MS4-permits and solid waste infrastructure projects. They provide technical expertise, conduct environmental evaluations, prepare documentation, works directly with clients, and supports construction oversight. This position will serve as a municipal MS4 permit coordinator, assisting communities with stormwater management program implementation, regulatory compliance, annual reporting, public education initiatives, and watershed protection activities.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Typical duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following: Prepares permit applications, technical reports, and supporting documentation for wastewater, stormwater, air quality and solid waste projects Conducts site assessments, inspections, and environmental monitoring to support project development and compliance Serves as technical liaison with South Macomb Sanitary District (SMSD), South Macomb Disposal Authority (SMDA), and municipal partners to review project requirements, respond to comments and maintain a positive working relationship Serves as technical resources and permit coordinator for municipal MS4 clients, supporting permit compliance, stormwater management planning, regulatory reporting requirement, preparing annual progress reports, complete outfall inspections & source investigations Develops engineering reports, feasibility studies, environmental impact summaries, and corrective action plans Monitoring job progress, schedule, and budget Ensuring all project activities comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including EGLE and EPA requirements. Analyze environmental data (water quality, flow monitoring, soil conditions, waste characterization) and prepare engineering recommendations Provide oversight during construction, including reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and verifying environmental compliance on-site Identify opportunities to enhance environmental performance, sustainability, and operational efficiency for client facilities Mentoring less experienced staff
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree in Environmental or Civil Engineering from an accredited program is required. A minimum of four years post graduate experience is required. Active Professional Engineer license in the State of Michigan. Familiarity with EGLE, MS4 and EPA regulations, standards and reporting requirements. Proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS, and hydraulic modeling tools. Strong technical writing, communication, and documentation skills. Ability to conduct fieldwork, site inspections, and sampling activities as needed. Familiarity with solid waste management, landfill operations, or leachate systems.
