Job Summary:
Basic Purpose of Position:
Works independently to solve a wide range of complex problems in underwater acoustics. Provides extensive knowledge in field of specialization and working knowledge of other fields. Capable of clearly defining appropriate technical approaches and solutions to most Sparton critical challenges. Able to define critical project criteria to ensure project completion. Uses creativity to resolve complex issues. Has demonstrated leadership skills and a working knowledge of business and customer requirements. Demonstrates exceptional communications skills. Responsibilities and Tasks Design Design underwater hydrophones and/or active and passive transducers utilizing cylindrical ceramics, flexural disks, cantilever beams, and geophones. Support designs with analysis, simulations and calculations including space, MATLAB and FEA (COMSOL or equivalent). Prepare drawings/documentation for work as required for engineering and manufacturing of products. Assist with design modification of acoustic subsystems and systems for development. Evaluate materials and systems with respect to chemical safety and acoustic performance. Lead the design for manufacturing of the transducers, both in low-rate and high-rate production environments. Design Design underwater hydrophones and/or active and passive transducers utilizing cylindrical ceramics, flexural disks, cantilever beams, and geophones. Support designs with analysis, simulations and calculations including space, MATLAB and FEA (COMSOL or equivalent). Build Design, model, simulate, build and test complex acoustic transducers. Realize transducer designs by building or directing the build of prototype units for testing, verification and qualification Resolve product process and system issues; provide recommendation for enhancements and cost reductions; initiate Engineering Change Notices; and formulate cost impacts. Test & Integration Conduct or direct complex in-house and remote tests such as TVR, TPR and beam patterns. Develop test plans, procedures and reports for testing events at government facilities. Apply risk, failure analysis, and root cause analysis as required within the engineering discipline. Procedural Act as individual contributor in multi-disciplinary team designing transducers and other acoustic devices. May act as project lead including organizing, execution, and coordinating technical assignments Keep accurate and complete records of engineering activities. Provide training and/or direction to other engineers, technicians or manufacturing operators. Provide input to bid and proposal activities. Interact with customers during government testing and in-house demos. Travel and participation in product field tests. Use Sparton policies and procedures to complete work assignments. Safety Ensure that all assignments are performed in compliance with applicable Federal, State, Provincial and Company safety and health regulations, and where applicable, utilize proper personal protective equipment. Education, Experience & License or Certification
MSEE/BSME/MSAE/BSPHYS
; PhD preferred in acoustics/sonar/ultrasonic related field. A minimum of ten years related experience or equivalent education. Knowledge/skills must include strong education, theoretical background and experience with applied hands-on implementation expertise in electronic design, simulation, modeling, analysis, and test. Skills and Abilities US Citizenship is required Experience designing the acoustic architecture of complex underwater systems Design, fabrication and testing and qualification experience with military underwater sonar applications Design experience with underwater hydrophones and/or active and passive transducers utilizing cylindrical ceramics, flexural disks, cantilever beams, and geophones Finite element modeling/analysis experience with COMSOL, ANSYS and/or OnScale (PzFlex) required Experience with simulation and computational programs (e.g. MatLab, Python). Must be familiar with piezoelectric materials and associated applications Experience with transducer potting materials such as epoxies and urethanes Hands-on experience with development, building and testing of acoustic transducer assemblies and systems. Plusses include shock and vibration testing, designing for shock and vibration, experience with flow noise. Ability to draw solutions from both formal training and experience and use original thinking and ingenuity. Experience in generating design documentation, and technical reports. Ability to write proposals and provide proof-of-concept testing for business development. Proficiency in using MS Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Must show high initiative, be self-motivated, and have ability to act independently on technical matters. Must be able to obtain a Department of Defense security secret clearance, a plus is already having it.
