Mechatronics Engineer

Job Description

Blended mechanical, controls, and automation-support role for machine tools and production equipment.
Position Summary:
The Mechatronics Engineer supports the design, development, troubleshooting, and improvement of manufacturing equipment and machine tools. This role blends mechanical design, controls awareness, automation support, and hands-on troubleshooting. It is not a full electrical engineering role, but the successful candidate should be comfortable around PLC-controlled equipment, sensors, actuators, drives, schematics, and mechanical systems. Key Responsibilities Support design and development of new machine tools, automation systems, production equipment, fixtures, guards, and machine improvements. Create and modify mechanical designs using CAD, including frames, brackets, actuated mechanisms, sensor mounts, tooling aids, and related machine components. Work with Engineering, Tool & Die, Maintenance, Production, and Quality to define equipment needs and develop practical design solutions. Assist with PLC, HMI, sensor, servo, VFD, pneumatic, and electromechanical troubleshooting as part of machine development and support. Help specify and integrate sensors, actuators, cylinders, motors, drives, valves, switches, and basic control components. Read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, pneumatic diagrams, and machine documentation. Support automation tasks such as signal verification, I/O checkout, machine sequence review, panel troubleshooting, startup, and commissioning. Identify root causes of equipment issues by evaluating mechanical, electrical, controls, tooling, and process factors. Document machine changes, component selections, settings, controls notes, and troubleshooting findings while promoting safe, maintainable designs. Required Qualifications Bachelor degree, associate degree, technical degree, or equivalent experience in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, electromechanical engineering, automation, manufacturing engineering, or a related field. Mechanical design experience using SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software. Working knowledge of industrial equipment, mechanisms, sensors, pneumatics, motors, drives, and machine controls. Ability to read electrical schematics and basic control diagrams; full electrical engineering depth is not required. Hands-on experience troubleshooting manufacturing equipment and working safely around industrial machinery. Strong communication skills with toolmakers, maintenance technicians, operators, engineers, and supervisors. Preferred Qualifications Experience with PLC-controlled equipment such as Omron, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, or similar systems. Exposure to HMI screens, ladder logic, I/O mapping, analog signals, encoders, servo systems, VFDs, and machine sequencing. Experience with custom machinery, automation cells, press equipment, grinders, feeders, material handling, inspection equipment, or machine retrofits. Familiarity with pneumatic circuits, actuator sizing, sensor selection, machine guarding, and basic safety circuits. Success Profile Comfortable moving between CAD, the machine floor, and controls troubleshooting. Mechanically strong, controls-aware, practical, curious, and able to prove root cause instead of guessing.
