Certified Welding Inspector

Job Description

Overview Join our dynamic team as a Certified Welding Inspector and play a vital role in ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and compliance across our manufacturing processes. This is not a passive inspection role where you sit at a desk with a weld gauge. While maintaining our quality standards as an active AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is required, the primary focus of this role is active floor presence and fabrication support. You will spend a significant portion of your time working directly with shop crews, supporting layout, cutting, fitting, fit-up inspections, and heat control before and during the fabrication process.
Responsibilities Fabrication Support & Shop Floor Oversight:
Actively assist and guide shop personnel through non-welding fabrication tasks, including layout, cutting, fitting, and structural prep. Verify alignment and fit-up prior to welding to prevent defects down the line.
Distortion & Process Management:
Advise floor welders on proper sequencing, skip welding, heat control, and machine settings (voltage/wire speed) to prevent distortion, burn-through, or warping on varied steel thicknesses.
Quality & Code Inspection:
Perform visual inspections (VT) on structural steel fabrications in compliance with
AWS D1.1
code standards.
Documentation & Compliance:
Complete inspection reports, log non-conformance reports (NCRs), track repair statuses, and maintain accurate quality management records in accordance with AISC standards.
Procedure & Welder Testing:
Review Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR). Administer on-site welder qualification tests and maintain active welder continuity logs.
Collaboration & Issue Resolution:
Address weld rejections or fabrication issues constructively with shop personnel, enforcing quality standards firmly while maintaining a collaborative team environment.
Qualifications & Requirements Certification:
Current, active AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential.
Structural Steel Experience:
Proven experience inspecting and fabricating structural steel strictly under
AWS D1.1
code.
Fabrication Expertise:
Strong practical understanding of steel shop operations—viewing layout, fitting, and heat distortion control as essential components of overall weld quality.
Quality Systems:
Prior experience working within an AISC-certified facility or structured Quality Management System (QMS) is strongly preferred.
Bonus Credentials:
NDT certifications (UT, MT, PT) or Senior CWI (SCWI) status are a major plus. Logistics Pay = $27-35/hour
Pay:
$28.00 - $35.00 per hour
Work Location:
In person
