Greenfield, Indiana About Civan Lasers Civan Lasers develops high-power Dynamic Beam Lasers for advanced industrial welding applications. Our technology enables new manufacturing capabilities through dynamic beam shaping, allowing customers to weld thicker materials faster, with higher quality and lower distortion. As Civan expands its North American operations, we are seeking a hands-on Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead engineering activities in our Greenfield Application Center while supporting customer projects, equipment integration, and advanced manufacturing development. Position Summary The Senior Mechanical Engineer is a key member of Civan's North American engineering team and is responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting advanced laser welding applications for customers across multiple industries. This role combines mechanical engineering, manufacturing process development, robotics integration, laboratory management, and customer support. The engineer will lead customer application projects from initial concept through successful production implementation while working closely with customers, sales, service, and global engineering teams. Although laser welding experience is beneficial, candidates with strong backgrounds in manufacturing engineering, automation, robotics, industrial machinery, or heavy fabrication are encouraged to apply. Key ResponsibilitiesEngineering & Process Development Lead development and optimization of laser welding processes for customer applications. Design, develop, and validate manufacturing processes, fixtures, tooling, and workholding solutions. Plan and execute engineering trials, collect data, analyze results, and prepare technical reports. Evaluate weld quality through visual inspection, dimensional measurements, and metallographic analysis. Support development of robust manufacturing solutions for production environments. Application Laboratory Operations Lead day-to-day engineering activities within the Greenfield Application Center. Coordinate laboratory schedules, equipment utilization, and customer demonstrations. Maintain laboratory equipment, fixtures, robotics, and engineering documentation. Ensure safe operation of high-power laser systems and laboratory equipment. Customer Engineering Work directly with customers to understand manufacturing challenges and recommend laser welding solutions. Support customer demonstrations, feasibility studies, and production trials. Provide technical presentations and engineering recommendations throughout the sales process. Support process implementation at customer facilities. Mechanical Systems & Automation Design and improve fixtures, tooling, automation systems, and mechanical assemblies. Support integration of robotics, positioners, motion systems, seam tracking, and vision systems. Work closely with machine builders and automation partners to develop turnkey manufacturing systems. Support equipment installation, commissioning, and factory acceptance testing. Technical Service & Field Support Support installation and commissioning of Civan laser systems throughout North America. Assist customers with troubleshooting mechanical, manufacturing, automation, and process-related issues. Support preventive maintenance, equipment upgrades, and production optimization. Travel to customer facilities to provide engineering and technical support as required. Continuous Improvement Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing efficiency, process robustness, and product quality. Develop engineering standards, work instructions, and technical documentation. Provide feedback to global engineering and R&D teams to support future product improvements. Support development of new manufacturing capabilities and application technologies. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. 5+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, automation, industrial equipment, robotics, or heavy fabrication. Experience developing manufacturing processes and production equipment. Strong understanding of mechanical design, fixtures, and manufacturing methods. Experience with industrial robotics, CNC systems, motion control, or automated manufacturing equipment is highly desirable. Experience with laser processing, welding, machining, or metal fabrication is a plus but not required. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and customer-facing abilities. Willingness to travel approximately 25-35% throughout North America. Preferred Qualifications Experience with industrial automation or robotic systems (ABB, FANUC, KUKA, etc.) Knowledge of welding, metallurgy, or manufacturing process development.
