Job Overview We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Electric Utility Superintendent to lead and oversee the operations, maintenance, and safety of the City of Groton's electric utility system. This pivotal role involves managing the municipal electrical infrastructure, ensuring reliable power distribution, and supervising department staff engaged in power line construction, maintenance, and repair projects. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in electrical diagnostics, high-voltage wiring, and utility electrical systems, combined with excellent leadership skills to drive safety, efficiency, and operational excellence across all utility functions. Responsibilities Supervise the installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of overhead line systems, electrical transformers, relays, and other high-voltage electrical equipment. Oversee power line construction projects, including climbing poles, operating bucket trucks, and managing outdoor work environments safely and efficiently. Conduct electrical diagnostics using tools such as ohmmeters and field testing equipment to identify faults or system inefficiencies. Ensure compliance with safety procedures for high-voltage work, NEC (National Electrical Code) standards, PPE use, and electrical safety procedures during all operations. Coordinate utility locating activities and manage tree trimming efforts around power lines to prevent outages or hazards. Lead field service teams in relay testing, troubleshooting electrical issues in utility systems, and performing preventive maintenance on power distribution systems. Manage high-voltage electrical wiring projects while adhering to safety procedures for climbing and bucket operation. Maintain accurate records of electrical system inspections, repairs, testing results, and compliance documentation. Foster a culture of safety awareness by conducting training sessions on electrical safety procedures for team members working on construction sites or outdoor environments. Experience Journeyman Lineman certification required. Extensive background in power line construction projects including overhead line systems and utility electrical systems. Hands-on experience with electrical diagnostics tools such as ohmmeters and field testing equipment. Demonstrated ability to operate bucket trucks safely for climbing poles or working at heights. Knowledge of NEC standards, electrical blueprint reading, utility locating techniques, and cable management practices. Experience working within the public energy & utilities sector is highly preferred. Supervisory experience is highly preferred. Strong understanding of electrical safety procedures related to high-voltage work environments. Outdoor work experience involving tree trimming around power lines or outdoor maintenance activities is advantageous. Skilled in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during all phases of work involving high voltage or construction site environments.
