The Sanitation Districts protect public health and the environment through innovative and cost-effective wastewater and solid waste management, and in doing so convert waste into resources such as recycled water, energy and recycled materials.

DEPARTMENT, CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT SECTION, CARSON FIELD OFFICE, CARSON ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
To provide direct supervision and technical direction to the land survey group, assign survey crews to conduct surveys for property, design, and construction projects of sewers, pumping plants, water reclamation plants, and landfills.
JOB SUMMARY
The major job responsibilities are listed below. For more detailed information, please review the job description. Under the direction of the Superintendent of Construction Inspection or higher, the incumbent will: Plan, assign, schedule, evaluate and coordinate the work of the survey crews Visit field sites to review the progress of projects Establish and standardize survey technology system updates, improvements and enhancements Collaborate with staff, vendors, and consultants to identify, analyze, recommend, and implement hardware and software applications to facilitate and enhance the planning and overall management of the survey projects Participate in internal and external user groups to remain current with industry standards, best practices, and emerging technologies Provide technical guidance to subordinates Specify and review work procedures Contact designers and engineers to discuss changes or clarifications to survey requests Develop and coordinate training sessions for survey crews Prepare reports and correspondences Work on specialized survey projects requiring advanced survey decision making Review surveyor's field notes Order supplies, materials and equipment Participate in recommending personnel actions Provide guidance, reviewing, updating, revising or creating legal descriptions for both existing and proposed District properties, easements, leases or agreements File property line, legal descriptions, and corner surveys with the County Recorder's Office Oversee drone operations and operating an unmanned drone for aerial surveys

Work schedule is Monday
Friday 6:30 am
3:00 pm; some overtime work on nights or weekend as required by project but on a pre-arranged, pre-approved basis.
Candidates must possess:
A California State Certificate of Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors or equivalent
AND•One (1) year of experience in the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts performing the duties of a Survey Party Chief II•OR•six (6) years of increasingly responsible field land survey experience May be required to obtain an FAA Pt.
107 Remote Pilot Certificate to operate an unmanned aerial drone
Licenses, Certificates & Special Requirements:
Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California Class C driver license
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of survey laws and standards, including coordinate systems, datums, boundary law, and applicable state and local statutes Strong knowledge of surveying principles, equipment, software, and applicable regulations, including experience with Leica surveying equipment and software Extensive experience in construction surveying for underground utilities, roadways, buildings, and processing/treatment facilities Ability to effectively communicate expectations, findings, evaluations, and project updates to staff, clients, and stakeholders in verbal and written formats Experience supervising or leading a team of field survey crews, including assigning work, providing technical guidance, and evaluating performance The competitive selection process may include :
Knowledge of:
Surveying principles, procedures and equipment including calculators, computers, data loggers and other survey relay equipment Principles and practices of supervision, training and leadership Safety laws and procedures in traffic, sewers, construction and wilderness situations Digital input and output devices and translation for working protocol for CAD systems Industry trends and changes regarding land survey software and hardware Ability to: Assign, instruct, guide and evaluate subordinate staff Interpret, apply and communicate job assignments and Districts' policies and procedures Direct the work of field survey crews and train others in surveying procedures and techniques Establish survey procedures Operate manual and digital survey equipment Compile survey data and maintain field notes and records using appropriate survey software Read and comprehend drawings, maps, technical data, and written requests for various types of topographic survey Write legal descriptions of properties including boundaries Plan, coordinate and evaluate the work of others Interact effectively with management, employees, vendors and consultants Remain current with existing and evolving technologies and software applications related to land surveying
