EMC Technician (Support Technician - Component Products Department) Job Description The EMC Technician supports a growing electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) team that provides testing services to global design groups developing next-generation electronics, including fully electric machines, autonomous systems, controls, sensors, and displays. In this role, you perform hands-on work in an engineering lab, maintain and operate test equipment, execute functional and durability evaluations, and assist with EMC testing projects. You collaborate closely with technicians, engineers, and clients to ensure products meet performance, electrical, environmental, and durability requirements while contributing to the development and validation of advanced electronic systems. Responsibilities Support EMC testing projects in the lab by setting up equipment, preparing test configurations, and ensuring all systems are ready for evaluation. Run EMC and related tests, including performance, electrical, environmental, and durability evaluations, following established procedures and standards. Troubleshoot failures and anomalies found during testing, identifying potential root causes in electrical or mechanical systems and documenting findings. Provide regulatory and radio frequency (RF) physics consulting support to clients whenever possible, helping them understand EMC requirements and constraints. Document test results clearly and accurately, including test conditions, measurements, observations, and outcomes, to support engineering analysis and reporting. Work with senior technicians to plan tests, schedule lab activities, and maintain test equipment according to prescribed maintenance schedules. Collaborate with EMC engineers to provide feedback on designs, test setups, and regulatory considerations, helping to ensure products comply with EMC standards. Partner with clients to troubleshoot their products during testing, ensuring that test methods realistically cover possible field conditions and usage scenarios. Analyze field returns and perform basic functional evaluations and other directed tests to support development and validation activities. Log metrics related to testing and equipment usage, ensuring accurate records that support continuous improvement and traceability. Ensure test equipment, including electronic lab instruments, remains in good working condition by performing routine checks, basic repairs, and preventive maintenance. Integrate effectively with fellow technicians and engineering staff, contributing to a collaborative team environment focused on high-quality testing and validation. Support the growth of the EMC team by adapting to increasing testing requirements and assisting with new test capabilities as needed. Essential Skills Experience troubleshooting electrical or mechanical systems, such as repairing vehicles, building computers, or similar hands-on technical work. A 2-year electronics degree or equivalent applicable experience in electronics or a closely related field. Ability to perform basic functional evaluations and testing of electronic components and systems. Capability to follow detailed test procedures and maintain accurate documentation of test setups and results. Proficiency with general computer use, including MS Office or similar productivity tools, to record data and prepare reports. Strong attention to detail and ability to identify, document, and communicate issues discovered during testing. Effective collaboration skills to work closely with technicians, engineers, and clients in a lab environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications EMC, RF, or PCB experience is highly desired, particularly in testing or design environments. Understanding of basic electronics concepts such as capacitance and related circuit behavior. Hands-on skills in soldering and crimping, along with the ability to read and interpret circuit diagrams and schematics. Understanding of radio frequency physics and its application to EMC testing and RF systems. Experience or hobbies related to ham radio or software-defined radio. General electronics laboratory experience, including building, testing, or debugging electronic circuits and systems. Familiarity with electronic lab equipment such as spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, power meters, amplifiers, signal generators, and network analyzers. Interest in working with advanced EMC technology and contributing to the development of next-generation electronic products. Work Environment This role is based on-site at a dedicated EMC and electronics testing facility, where you will spend most of your time working in a lab environment. You will use a variety of electronic test instruments, including spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, power meters, amplifiers, signal generators, and network analyzers, to support EMC and functional testing. The work involves hands-on interaction with electronic components, circuit boards, and test setups, as well as regular use of computers and standard office software for data entry and documentation. You will collaborate closely with technicians, engineers, and clients in a professional, team-oriented setting that is experiencing growth as EMC testing requirements increase.
