Staff Accountant Job Description The Staff Accountant plays a key role in ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting by preparing and posting journal entries, maintaining and reconciling general ledger accounts, and supporting month-end and year-end close processes. This position helps safeguard the integrity of financial data, supports internal and external audits, and collaborates with cross-functional teams to maintain compliance with established accounting standards and company policies. Responsibilities Prepare and post journal entries to ensure all business transactions are recorded accurately and in a timely manner. Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts on a regular basis, identifying and resolving discrepancies promptly. Perform daily balancing of accounts and investigate, document, and correct any variances. Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including the preparation of financial reports and supporting schedules. Identify, research, and correct accounting errors and inconsistencies to maintain the integrity of financial records. Support internal and external audits by providing accurate documentation, reports, and clear explanations as needed. Collaborate with other departments to ensure the completeness and accuracy of financial data and to resolve accounting-related questions. Maintain compliance with company policies, GAAP, and established accounting standards in all financial activities. Work daily with ERP and accounting software systems to process transactions, generate reports, and update financial records. Use Microsoft Excel to format data, copy and paste information, and organize text into columns for analysis and reporting. Manage workload independently, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet established deadlines for daily, monthly, and annual activities. Essential Skills At least 2+ years of relevant work experience in general ledger (G/L) accounting. Hands-on experience posting journal entries and performing month-end and year-end closings. Proficiency with accounting software, including experience with QuickBooks or similar platforms. Strong knowledge of GAAP and general ledger accounting principles and practices. Experience working daily with ERP systems to manage and report financial data. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formatting, copying, pasting, and organizing text into columns. Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills to manage multiple accounts and deadlines. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while consistently meeting deadlines. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify and resolve accounting issues. Effective written and verbal communication skills for working with auditors, colleagues, and other departments. Additional Skills & Qualifications Associate's degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field preferred. Experience in employee benefits, union, and/or non-profit environments preferred. Comfort working in a collaborative team setting with other accounting and eligibility specialists. Ability to adapt to established policies and procedures while contributing to continuous improvement. Interest in professional growth and development within an accounting-focused environment. Work Environment This is a full-time, on-site role working five days per week in the office. The workday begins at either 7:00 a.m. or 8:00 a.m., based on personal preference, and follows an 8.5-hour schedule with a 30-minute lunch break. Once selected, the start time remains consistent each day to support team coordination and workflow. The Staff Accountant works as part of a close-knit team that includes three other staff accountants and one eligibility specialist, within a structured accounting department. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lanham, MD. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.85 - $36.06/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
