Full-time with benefits; exempt from overtime regulations. The Haitian Project is a Rhode Island-based Catholic nonprofit that supports and oversees one of the best secondary education programs in Haiti, focused on the formation of Haiti's future servant-leaders so that the country may realize a brighter future built by and for Haitians themselves. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Finance & Admin, the Staff Accountant is responsible for day-to-day accounting activity. The Staff Accountant carries out accounting operations, monitors revenue and expenses, maintains accurate financial records, and supports the infrastructure and systems needed to maintain excellent financial operation and sustain growth. Salary range is $70,000 to $80,000 a year, depending on experience, with great benefits including health insurance, life and long-term disability insurance, retirement, educational assistance, and generous leave. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Monitor and report on the use of all funds. Carry out day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash flow, and monthly reconciliations. Ensure that all revenue is properly retrieved, processed, recorded, deposited and reported on, and that tax receipts are executed properly and in a timely manner. Maintain and update financial records and internal controls in line with company policies and accounting standards. Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and fund accounting. Assist with month-end and year-end closings and the preparation of financial statements. Support financial analysis and data verification for internal reporting and evaluation. Participate in budget preparation, monitoring and analysis. Support audit activities, tax filings, and financial reporting requirements. Support grant accounting activities, including tracking, expense allocation, and reporting. Participate in special projects and process improvement initiatives. Provide general support to the finance department.
Requirements:
Background check is required. Alignment and commitment to The Haitian Project's mission is essential. This position is full-time onsite at The Haitian Project's headquarters in North Kingstown, RI. This position requires participation in four to six weekend meetings a year. Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. 2+ years of accounting experience preferred, ideally in the nonprofit sector. Solid working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Motivated self-starter with strong initiative, time management and follow-through. Highly detail-oriented and organized with a focus on accuracy. Ability to prioritize, manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Ability to analyze and report on financial activity, data, and targets. An effective communicator, with strong interpersonal and oral & written skills. Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, discretion, and professionalism. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel & QuickBooks; facility with technology.
