Johnson City, Texas (full time) The Science Mill is seeking a versatile, detail-oriented Accounting Specialist to join our team. This role is ideal for a professional with strong accounting and bookkeeping experience who thrives in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.   • Maintain accounting procedures, policies, and internal controls to ensure financial integrity.
  • Manage all aspects of day-to-day bookkeeping, including A/P and A/R.
  • Process and pay invoices in a timely manner.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports (standard financials, budget vs. actuals, project reports).
  • Assist with preparation of the annual organizational budget, with staff input.
  • Support staff in developing grant and program budgets; maintain and generate budget reports.
  • Oversee departmental budgets and communicate with managers on budget performance.
  • Manage purchasing of supplies and equipment with consideration for budgets and program/exhibit needs.
  • Perform HR-related tasks such as new employee onboarding and serving as the liaison with the insurance broker for health insurance.
  • Handle occasional administrative tasks such as mail runs and errands.
  • Take on non-routine assignments requiring judgment, initiative, and problem-solving. Qualifications
  • Strong proficiency in QuickBooks (transactions, budgeting, reporting).
  • Experience with Altru/Financial Edge is a plus.
  • Accounting degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong Excel skills.
  • 3-5 years of bookkeeping/accounting experience (nonprofit or small business a plus).
  • Experience with creating, maintaining, and reporting on program/project budgets.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • High attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and strong problem-solving abilities. Position Details
  • Hours:
    Full-Time, 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday
  • Schedule:
    Occasional weekends/evenings required of all staff.
  • Compensation:
    Salary commensurate with experience.
  • Hybrid Work Schedule:
    This position may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule after initial 90-day training period, based on job performance, demonstrated ability to work independently, departmental needs, and supervisor authorization.
