POSITION SUMMARY
Legacy Steel is a West Michigan steel erection contractor specializing in structural steel work for commercial and industrial construction projects. We are an established company of approximately 60-80 employees with a hands-on, team-oriented work environment. This position offers the opportunity to develop broad, hands-on experience across multiple areas of accounting. The Accounting Specialist will gradually take ownership of recurring accounting processes and work closely with the Controller to learn the company's accounting systems and procedures. We're looking for someone who is detail-oriented, organized, comfortable asking questions, able to work independently, and interested in building an accounting career in the construction industry. Compensation is $55,000-$65,000 per year, depending on experience (full compensation and benefits details below).
KEY DELIVERABLES / RESPONSIBILITIES
Accounts Receivable & Billing
- Prepare and manage monthly AIA progress billings
- Maintain customer accounts and accounts receivable records
- Prepare and process lien waivers
- Maintain accurate contract and change order information Payroll & Certified Payroll
- Assist with biweekly payroll processing
- Collect and review employee time and payroll information
- Process employee changes and maintain payroll records
- Prepare prevailing wage payroll and certified payroll reports
- Maintain certified payroll documentation and submit required reports
- Work with payroll and HR systems Construction & General Accounting
- Provide general accounting support to the Controller
- Assist with customer and project-related accounting tasks
- Maintain accurate accounting records and documentation
- Assist with special projects and process improvements as needed
REQUIREMENTS
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting
- Strong understanding of fundamental accounting principles
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently while knowing when to ask questions
- Comfortable learning new systems
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred:
- 1-2 years of accounting experience
- Construction accounting experience
- Experience with QuickBooks Desktop or similar accounting software
- Experience with payroll or accounts receivable

TYPE OF ENVIRONMENT
Office The work environment for this position is a typical office environment. The physical demands require the ability to sit for long periods of time. Intermittent movement, such as accessing centrally located office equipment, occasional lifting of up to 35 lbs, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching, may be necessary to perform the requirements of this position.
