We are in a dynamic phase of our development, with capital formation activity, investment banking relationships, and potential IPO-related milestones on the horizon. This is an opportunity to join a company at an inflection point where your contributions will have a direct, visible impact on the organization's financial trajectory. The Opportunity We are hiring a Director of Accounting to lead our accounting and finance team, reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer. This is a hands-on leadership role: you will own the monthly close, manage a small team of two, prepare and review SEC filings, serve as the primary liaison with external auditors, and ensure the company's financial reporting is accurate, timely, and fully compliant. Our CFO has over a decade of tenure with the company and deep relationships with investors, board members, auditors, and legal counsel. She is focused on high-value strategic activities including capital raises, investment banking, and investor relations. Your job is to make that possible by running the day-to-day accounting function with minimal oversight — delivering clean, reviewed financial packages that are ready for CFO-level review, not raw work-in-progress. We are also committed to integrating AI tools into our accounting workflows. This is not aspirational — it is an active initiative with executive sponsorship and dedicated AI subject matter experts supporting the team. We expect our Director of Accounting to embrace AI as a force multiplier, lead its adoption within the department, and ensure that AI-assisted outputs meet professional standards. What You'll Do Own and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process from start to finish Manage, develop, and hold accountable a team of two accounting professionals, including conducting regular one-on-ones, assigning work, reviewing output, and addressing performance Prepare and/or review financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) to SEC reporting standards Prepare first drafts of SEC filings including 10-Q, 10-K, and 8-K reports with footnotes and MD&A disclosures Serve as the primary day-to-day liaison with external auditors: manage PBC lists, respond to audit inquiries, and coordinate fieldwork Manage the compliance calendar: track all SEC filing deadlines, tax due dates, audit milestones, and regulatory requirements Review all journal entries, reconciliations, and work papers prepared by your team before posting or finalization Perform technical accounting research on complex transactions (lease accounting, revenue recognition, equity transactions) and prepare accounting memos Establish, maintain, and improve internal controls and accounting policy documentation Lead AI tool adoption within the accounting team: work with company AI specialists to implement automated workflows, validate AI-generated outputs, and ensure the team uses technology effectively Provide the CFO with clean, reviewed financial packages and proactive communication on compliance items, team performance, and operational issues
What We're Looking For Required:
Active CPA license (required, non-negotiable) 5+ years of progressive accounting experience including at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role with direct reports SEC reporting experience: direct involvement in preparing or reviewing 10-Q and/or 10-K filings Strong US GAAP technical knowledge including proficiency with current standards (ASC 842, ASC 606, etc.) Hands-on monthly close experience: you can prepare financial statements and work papers, not just review them Experience serving as a liaison with external auditors Demonstrated people management skills: you have managed, developed, and held team members accountable in a professional setting Proficiency with accounting software/ERP systems Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
Strongly Preferred:
Experience at a publicly traded company (SEC registrant) Big 4 or national firm audit experience Experience with AI tools in accounting or finance (or demonstrated openness to learning and adopting them) Experience managing teams of 2-5 people in a hands-on environment where you also carry your own workload Experience with ERP implementation or process improvement initiatives Familiarity with XBRL tagging and SEC filing mechanics Master's degree in
Accounting or MBA The Right Personality:
You are a player-coach who leads from the front, not a delegator who waits for work to arrive at your desk You are proactive about identifying problems before they become crises — you check on your team, not just their deliverables You take ownership of the close and the team's output as if your name were on the filing You see AI as a tool that makes you more effective, not a threat to your profession You communicate clearly and directly with your CFO — no surprises, no buried issues You can manage someone who needs structure and close oversight without micromanaging or creating resentment What We Offer Competitive salary: $140,000 - $160,000 depending on experience and qualifications Stock Options and insurance benefits Direct involvement in a public company's growth trajectory, including potential capital raises and IPO-related activity A seat at the table: you report directly to the CFO and interact regularly with executive leadership A team that is being built the right way, with clear roles, defined expectations, and investment in AI tools to maximize effectiveness The opportunity to shape the accounting function — build processes, implement systems, and develop your team How to Apply Submit your resume and a brief cover letter explaining your interest in this role. In your cover letter, please address two questions: Describe your experience managing a small accounting team while also carrying your own technical workload. How did you balance both? Have you used AI tools in your accounting or finance work? If so, how? If not, how would you approach adopting them? The Company, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
