Job Description

Overview We are seeking a hands-on, detail-driven Controller who thrives in the day-to-day mechanics of accounting while leading a growing team. This is a player-coach role for someone who is comfortable in Excel, in the general ledger, and in conversations about cash, collections, and compliance. The Controller will oversee accounts receivable, general ledger accounting, tax compliance , and manage a team of approximately eight accounting and finance professionals . This role plays a critical part in improving cash flow, tightening reporting timelines, and building practical systems that scale. Key Responsibilities Hands-On Accounting & Close Own the general ledger and ensure accurate, timely recording of all financial activity Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations Lead and actively participate in monthly, quarterly, and year-end close Produce reliable financial statements and management reporting Investigate variances and resolve issues directly Accounts Receivable & Cash Flow Directly oversee and participate in billing, collections, credit management, and AR problem-solving Monitor AR aging, unapplied cash, and customer trends; take action to improve collections Build and enforce AR policies while supporting operational teams Partner with sales and operations to resolve billing and pricing issues Tax Compliance & Filings Own and oversee tax compliance , including sales and use tax, payroll tax, property tax, and income tax coordination Prepare or review sales tax filings and reconciliations across multiple jurisdictions Serve as primary contact with external tax advisors, payroll providers, and taxing authorities Maintain organized tax documentation and support audits or inquiries Excel, Reporting & Template Building Build and maintain Excel templates and models for reconciliations, AR tracking, close checklists, and management reporting Create repeatable tools that reduce errors, improve visibility, and speed up close timelines Translate raw data into clear, decision-ready financial summaries Continuously improve reporting tools as the business evolves Leadership & Team Management Manage, mentor, and develop a team of approximately eight accounting and AR professionals Set clear priorities and expectations in a fast-moving environment Step in and support the team during high-volume or time-sensitive periods Support hiring, onboarding, and performance management Process Improvement & Controls Build practical internal controls appropriate for a growing company Identify inefficiencies and implement improvements across AR, close, and reporting Balance speed, accuracy, and scalability Document processes as systems and teams mature Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA a plus, not required) 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with strong general ledger ownership Direct experience managing accounts receivable and cash flow Experience handling or overseeing tax compliance and filings Advanced Excel skills , including building templates, reconciliations, and management reports Prior team leadership experience preferred Skills & Attributes Player-coach mindset; comfortable being in the details Strong Excel and data organization skills Practical, solutions-oriented, and comfortable building structure from scratch Clear communicator with high accountability Thrives in a hands-on, growth-stage environment Why This Role High ownership and visibility across the business Direct impact on cash flow, compliance, and reporting discipline Opportunity to build tools, processes, and a team that scale
