This position is ideal for an accounting professional who is comfortable taking ownership of the full accounting cycle while working closely with the firm's partners, attorneys, employees, outside accountants, benefit providers, and other professional service providers. The Controller plays an integral role in the day-to-day operations and financial management of the firm and must be able to independently manage competing priorities, meet recurring deadlines, and provide management with timely and accurate financial information. Key Responsibilities Manage the firm's day-to-day accounting operations and general ledger, including accounts receivables, and account payables. Perform monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing procedures. Prepare and analyze financial statements and management reports. Maintain accurate client trust accounting records in accordance with applicable requirements. Process and oversee bi-weekly payroll including administration of employee benefits. Assist firm management with HR-related administrative matters. Prepare financial forecasts, cash projections, and other management analyses including annual budgeting and financial planning. Issue 1099 forms. Coordinate W-2s, retirement plan reporting, and other annual compliance matters. Maintain financial records and supporting documentation in an organized and audit-ready manner. Coordinate with outside vendors, accountants, insurance brokers, payroll providers, and benefit administrators. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred, CPA preferred. Significant accounting experience with responsibility for the full accounting cycle. Prior Controller, Accounting Manager, Finance Manager, or similar senior accounting experience preferred. Law firm or other professional-services accounting experience strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, cash-flow management, payroll, and reconciliations. Experience with legal billing and trust accounting is highly desirable. Strong Microsoft Excel skills. Experience with QuickBooks Online and LEAP legal practice-management/accounting software is a plus. Excellent organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail. Ability to handle confidential financial, employee, partner, and client information with discretion. Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple deadlines, and take ownership of responsibilities from beginning to completion. Strong written and verbal communication skills. The Ideal Candidate The successful candidate will be proactive, dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a small professional-services environment where the Controller is directly involved in both strategic financial matters and day-to-day operations. This is a hands-on and on-site position . The ideal candidate is someone who can move comfortably between preparing financial analyses for firm leadership, managing cash flow, completing reconciliations, processing payroll, overseeing billing, administering benefits, and addressing the unexpected operational matters that arise in a busy law firm. The position requires someone who does not simply identify an issue but takes ownership of resolving it, follows through on deadlines, and keeps firm leadership informed of significant financial or operational matters.
