Job Description

The Covington County Commission is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assessment Clerk. The Assessment Clerk is responsible for locating, assessing, and maintaining accurate property records to ensure the correct annual production of county property tax bills. Positing is for two full-time positions.
Summary of Responsibilities:
This clerical role focuses heavily on the administrative management of local property records and public assistance for the Covington County Commission. The employee plays an essential part in the annual property tax cycle by processing spatial and financial updates to property files. Additionally, the position serves as a primary point of contact for community members seeking clarity on their property obligations. The work requires navigating data management systems, applying established administrative guidelines, and maintaining a high level of accuracy under fluctuating daily demands.
Duties:
Locating and assessing county property for taxation. Maintaining and updating property assessment records. Ensuring accurate data for annual tax bills. Assisting the public by phone and in-person. Answering customer questions regarding property ownership and taxes. Calculating taxes and processing address changes. Processing tax exemptions according to established guidelines. Filing document copies and performing general clerical tasks.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or an equivalent certification. Valid Alabama Driver's License currently in good standing. Computer proficiency to enter, retrieve, and update information. Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills. Strong organizational skills to manage physical and digital records. General clerical experience (preferred but not required). Knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs (preferred). Ability to pass mandated drug and alcohol screenings.
