Financial Controller

Job Description

Overview Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum is searching for a Financial Controller to lead our accounting operations, including supervising a small team and ensuring accurate records, compliance, and reporting. Specifically, the Controller will be responsible for preparing accurate and timely financial statements compliant with all relevant regulations, overseeing regulatory filings, financial disclosures, and audits, and maintaining the integrity and transparency of the company's financial information. This is a full-time, on-site position.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or closely related field
  • Seven or more years of progressive accounting experience
  • Skilled knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Ability to keep privileged information confidential
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Highly collaborative people skills with staff, board, and outside partners Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Three or more years of nonprofit accounting experience
  • Experience with grant reporting and compliance
  • Demonstrated skill with Sage Intact or other accounting software
  • Demonstrated skill with Microsoft Office

Shopify and Blackbaud Key Responsibilities:
Leadership
  • Lead and role model a focus on customer service and constructive problem solving.
  • Direct and oversee work activities of Vesterheim's accounting staff and partnering vendors.
  • Optimize Vesterheim's accounting processes and procedures with a focus on clarity, efficiency, and ease of use. Financial Management
  • Manage Vesterheim's day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, and general ledger.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for Vesterheim's staff and the Board of Trustees
  • Closely monitor Vesterheim's cash flow in partnership with Vesterheim's President / CEO and Vesterheim's Finance and Audit Chair.
  • Maintain strong relationships with banks and investment consultants that hold and manage Vesterheim funds.
  • Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end closes. Grant and Fund Accounting
  • Track Vesterheim restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Monitor expenditures of grant funds and ensure compliance with requirements.
  • Prepare financial reports for grantors and funding agencies.
  • Partner with Vesterheim staff to monitor grant budgets. Budgeting and Analysis
  • Assist the President/CEO and Leadership in preparation of the annual operating budget.
  • Monitor and report Vesterheim's financial performance against the approved budget.
  • Develop financial forecasts and projections when requested. Compliance and Audit
  • Coordinate Vesterheim's annual audit and IRS Form 990 preparation.
  • Partner with Vesterheim staff and the Finance and Audit Committee to research needed internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Maintain effectively established internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Develop and improve standard operating procedures to ensure clear and written documentation of accounting processes and practices to assist both staff and board members.
  • Ensure Vesterheim's compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulations.
  • Support Vesterheim's Finance and Audit Committee by providing reporting information for the Board of Trustees.
  • On request, attend Vesterheim's Finance and Audit Committee meetings and the quarterly meetings of Vesterheim's Board of Trustees, serving to support Vesterheim's Treasurer.
