Habitat for Humanity Choptank is looking for a hands-on, forward-thinking Controller to own our accounting function and help modernize the way we manage our finances. Working closely with our CEO, an accounting clerk, and a committed leadership team, you will have meaningful ownership of the organization's day-to-day accounting operations while also helping strengthen systems, processes, reporting, and financial controls. This is a role for someone who enjoys being close to the work. You would rather fix the process than simply supervise it , and you see technology and automation as tools to make a strong accounting function even better.
What You'll Do:
Own a reliable month-end close , including payroll allocations to grants and construction projects.
Manage bi-weekly payroll and related tax compliance.
Lead preparation for our June 30 fiscal year-end audit .
Ensure compliance with internal financial and board policie s, as well as applicable laws, regulations, grant requirements, and contracts.
Lead the development and monitoring of the organization's annual budget.
Keep reimbursable grant draws current and maintain audit-ready grant compliance files.
Develop and maintain per-house cost tracking for our construction program.
Maintain a rolling cash-flow forecast for a reimbursement-driven funding model.
Identify opportunities to replace manual workarounds with better systems and processes, including the practical use of automation and AI tools.
Prepare accurate and meaningful financial reporting for the CEO, Board of Directors, and leadership team.
Serve as a trusted financial resource and help translate financial information into actionable insights for organizational decision-making.
You'll Be a
Strong Fit If You Have:
5+ years of accounting experience, including at least 2 years with responsibility for owning a month-end close. Nonprofit or fund-accounting experience is strongly preferred.
Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and Excel.
A demonstrated track record of improving processes and implementing better systems.
Comfort learning and adopting new technology, including automation and AI tools.
A hands-on approach—you are comfortable digging into the details and solving problems yourself.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
Demonstrated integrity, sound judgment, and discretion when handling confidential financial and personnel information.
Experience with construction accounting, real estate development, or affordable housing is a plus.
Experience with federal, state, or private grant accounting is a plus.
CPA, CNAP, or comparable credentials are welcome but not required.
