About the Opportunity We are seeking a highly motivated, hands-on Controller to oversee finance, accounting, and business operations across two established and growing companies in the landscaping, irrigation, and outdoor services industries. This is an opportunity for an entrepreneurial, technology-forward professional to take ownership of financial operations while playing a key role in building the systems, processes, and infrastructure needed to support significant future growth. Reporting directly to ownership (one of which is CFO), this individual will work closely with management, administrative staff, and field operations across both businesses. Will split time in Monmouth and Ocean County, mostly Ocean County. Key Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Management Own day-to-day accounting, monthly close, reconciliations, and financial reporting across both companies. Oversee AP, AR, payroll accounting, and existing bookkeeping and data-entry personnel while remaining actively involved in accounting execution. Manage cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, lines of credit, and working capital requirements. Develop budgets, forecasts, and job profitability reporting, with particular emphasis on labor costing, resource allocation, overhead allocation methodologies, and accurate project-level margins. Provide experienced guidance in developing costing models to support pricing, estimating, and operational decisions. Establish consistent accounting policies, internal controls, and management reporting. Manage sales and use tax filings, general regulatory compliance, and coordination with external accountants and tax advisors. Business Operations & Leadership Supervise and develop office and administrative personnel across both companies, improving accountability, communication, and efficiency. Oversee HR administration, employee onboarding, payroll, benefits, vendor relationships, and general office operations. Ensure compliance with applicable labor and employment regulations, including wage and hour requirements, employee classifications, timekeeping, personnel records, and workers' compensation. Oversee business insurance policies, renewals, audits, certificates of insurance, and related compliance requirements. Manage company vehicle and equipment administration, including financing, registrations, titles, renewals, and related documentation. Work closely with field management to improve scheduling, crew utilization, estimating, resource allocation, and operational workflows. Identify inefficiencies, improve accountability, and implement scalable business processes across both companies. Technology, Systems & Process Improvement Oversee QuickBooks Online and become highly proficient in the companies' CRM, estimating, and field-service management platforms. Lead technology improvements, system integrations, and workflow automation across both businesses. Leverage AI and emerging technologies to improve productivity, reporting, and operational efficiency. Develop scalable systems, dashboards, and standardized processes to support continued growth. Evaluate and implement new software and technology solutions as business needs evolve. Ideal Candidate Strong accounting background with prior Controller, Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, or comparable experience. Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Excel. Demonstrated experience with job costing, labor burden calculations, overhead allocation, and profitability analysis. Experience overseeing accounting processes, financial reporting, cash management, and administrative personnel. Proven ability to implement systems, improve processes, and leverage technology. Highly organized, analytical, resourceful, and comfortable working independently. A proactive, hands-on problem solver who takes ownership and thrives in an entrepreneurial environment. Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to work across office and field teams. Experience in construction, landscaping, home services, or similar industries strongly preferred. Familiarity with field-service CRMs, estimating software, automation, and AI tools is a significant plus. Experience with sales tax compliance, business insurance administration, and general regulatory requirements preferred. Why Join Us? This is not a traditional Controller position focused solely on financial reporting. You'll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on two established businesses, work directly with ownership, modernize systems, develop teams, and help build the infrastructure for their next stage of growth. We are looking for someone who is equally comfortable rolling up their sleeves to solve today's problems and developing better systems for tomorrow.
Compensation:
$90,000-$115,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
