Equine Patient Preparation & Assessment- Perform patient examinations and assist in categorizing anesthetic risk. Obtain or estimate accurate patient weight. Run and review pre-operative bloodwork as indicated. Ensure all required consent and permission forms are completed and properly archived. Develop anesthesia plans and accurately calculate/document all drug dosages. Administer anesthetic and supportive medications as directed. Place intravenous (IV) and intra-arterial (IA) catheters as needed. Equine Anesthesia Monitoring & Management- Prepare and run anesthesia safely and efficiently. Maintain a thorough understanding of anesthetic drugs and their effects. Understand and accurately record intra-operative monitoring parameters. Monitor direct and indirect blood pressure throughout procedures. Complete anesthesia records thoroughly, attach them to patient files, and print copies for the anesthesia record book. Participate in after-hours and on-call anesthesia coverage as required. Equipment Maintenance & Surgical Support- Maintain anesthesia machines in clean working order and ensure successful leak testing before use. Clean and restock the anesthesia cart before and after every surgery. Ensure monitoring leads and equipment are functioning properly and cleaned appropriately. Restock and maintain the anesthesia tote. Turn oxygen tanks on prior to surgery and off afterward. Replace, label, and organize empty oxygen tanks as needed. Clean, disinfect, and prepare endotracheal tubes for sterilization. Assist with surgical billing, including anesthesia charges. Teaching & Leadership- Assist in training interns, externs, and fellow technicians in anesthesia procedures and protocols. Promote a positive learning environment by teaching with patience, professionalism, and consistency. Shared Department Duties- Return surgical tables to dorsal recumbency setup following procedures and in preparation for emergencies. Prepare equine colic drape packs and colic instrument boxes for emergency readiness. Wash and dry towels and scrubs as needed. Clean, scrub, and disinfect the operating room and induction stalls using approved disinfectants. Clean, disinfect, and repack instruments for sterilization. Wipe down and disinfect mats, tables, counters, and other shared equipment after every procedure. Assist with equine anesthesia recovery and patient monitoring post-operatively.
