EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED
1. Minimum of Bachelor's degree from an accredited Athletic Training Program or Nursing Program 2. RIDOH Athletic Trainer License 3. CPR/AED certification and Concussion training in accordance with those respective institutions, other certifications as required 4. Passion for working with students, families, and colleagues 5. Demonstrated aptitude for work to be performed 6. Commitment to remain current in content knowledge and instructional pedagogy 7. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children and adults 8. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and in conformity with certification requirements. 9. Criminal Records Check (BCI) in accordance with RIGL § 16-2-18.1
POSITION SUMMARY:
To apply the principles, methods, and procedures of evaluation and treatment of athletic injuries, preconditioning, condition and re-conditioning of athletes through the use of appropriate preventive and supportive means. While the domains of athletic training dictate the professional standards of the position, the Athletic Trainer has numerous responsibilities, including the primary responsibility of caring for the physical needs of student-athletes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. To prevent athletic injuries through the following procedures: orthopedic screening, individual exercise programs for athletes with pre-existing conditions, and to participate in equipment fitting for football and ice hockey. 2. To recognize and evaluate athletic injuries. 3. To provide medical coverage for home contests and daily practices, to coordinate emergency medical procedures for all teams at all locations, to coordinate emergency medical services as needed, to follow the prescribed treatment of the team physician/or licensed physician. 4. To provide for the management, treatment, and disposition of athletic injuries by providing injury evaluations before and after practices and referring athletes to the appropriate health care professional. 5. To provide rehabilitation of athletic injuries when appropriate, such as rehabilitation for mild to moderate injuries as prescribed by the team/or licensed physician and provide strength and range of motions and functional testing for injured athletes to insure readiness to return to their sport. 6. To maintain data and complete necessary reports as is required including: all physical forms, injury and progress reports; necessary insurance forms for athletes with medical referrals; daily injury report list with appropriate recommendations; and supply and equipment inventories. 7. To organize pre-season physicals for all prospective candidates. 8. To keep parents, coaches, and the athletic director informed of the athlete's progress in rehabilitation. 9. To provide for appropriate educational programs for athletes, coaching staff, parents, and others as may be required. 10.Prevention, recognition, assessment, evaluation, management, referral (if necessary), and rehabilitation of acute and chronic, sports-related injuries. 11.Work with the Director of Athletics and School Nurse to collect GHS Athletic Clearance Forms, physicals, ImPACT baseline tests, and other related clearance paperwork. 12.Attend all home contests and practices and provide any necessary medical attention. 13.Provide after-school athletic training room services. 14.Possibly serve as a preceptor/mentor to clinical athletic training students. 15.Work closely with the Director of Athletics in developing coverage schedules, athletic training room policies and procedures, and revising existing policies and procedures. 16.Work closely with the Director of Athletics in maintaining all athletic training supplies and assist with re-orders when necessary. 17.Issue, maintain, collect, and clean first aid kits, water bottles, and water coolers for all sports teams. 18.Complete appropriate insurance and/or referral forms for athletes seen by a physician. 19.Work closely with the Director of Athletics in maintaining CPR/AED, concussion education, and emergency action plan acknowledgment logs for all coaches. 20.Provide timely communication with parents/guardians regarding all injuries/concerns. 21.Enforce, utilize, and facilitate the established concussion return to play protocol for any and all student-athletes who sustain a concussion. 22.Maintain appropriate electronic and/or written records of all injuries. 23.Other duties as required by the building principal or Athletic Director
Terms of Employment:
215 days First day of August pre-season practice through the last day of Spring competition, on a daily basis, including nights, weekends, and some holidays.
Hours:
As determined by High School Principal and Athletic Director to accommodate athletic team schedules.
Salary and Benefits:
Per negotiated contract with the Portsmouth School Committee and Superintendent of Schools, and will be commensurate with experience.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the High School Principal and Athletic Director.
