We are a busy neurotology practice located in Chandler, Arizona, staffed by two neurotologists and six clinical audiologists, three of whom hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A). Our practice is part of Valley Ear, Nose & Throat (Valley ENT), one of the largest ENT practices in the United States. The Audiology and Neurotology departments work collaboratively in an interprofessional environment to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care. Externs will gain extensive hands-on experience in a wide range of diagnostic and rehabilitative services, including cochlear implant evaluations and programming, bone conduction hearing device (BAHA) evaluations and programming, hearing aid consultations and fittings, pediatric and adult diagnostic audiologic evaluations, and pediatric and adult auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing. Externs will also have the opportunity to observe and participate in sedated ABRs performed in the operating room. Additional learning opportunities include cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) testing and the evaluation and treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Vestibular opportunities are extremely rare, but do occur annually. Our practice is fast-paced while maintaining a strong commitment to patient-centered care. We are dedicated to evidence-based practice and consistently incorporate best practices into our clinical care, including the use of real-ear measurements for hearing aid fittings and electrically evoked stapedial reflex threshold (eSRT) measurements during cochlear implant programming. Yes Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship: Applicants should have demonstrated competency in the following areas prior to beginning their fourth-year externship:

• Basic hearing aid knowledge, including device function, verification principles, and routine troubleshooting.
• Ability to independently and safely obtain ear impressions for custom earmolds and hearing protection devices.
• Basic diagnostic audiologic assessment skills for both pediatric and adult patients, including pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, tympanometry, and otoacoustic emissions.
• A solid understanding of auditory anatomy and physiology, with the ability to interpret audiometric test results and differentiate sensorineural, conductive, and mixed hearing loss.
• Professional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team.
• A willingness to accept feedback, demonstrate initiative, and contribute positively in a collaborative, fast-paced clinical environment.

Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: Throughout the externship experience, externs will develop advanced clinical skills and work toward achieving independent clinical competency in the following areas:

• Cochlear implant evaluation, mapping, and patient management.
• Hearing aid evaluation, selection, fitting, verification, programming, troubleshooting, and follow-up care.
• Bone conduction hearing device (BAHA) evaluation, fitting, follow-up care.
• Clinical differential diagnosis through integration of case history, audiologic test results, medical findings, and patient presentation to develop appropriate clinical recommendations.
• Auditory brainstem response (ABR) evaluation, interpretation, and clinical application for both pediatric and adult patients.
• Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) evaluation and interpretation.
