Job Description

12 month (2080 hours) externship in busy VA clinic serving adult and geriatric Veterans. 1 positions at the location in Colorado Springs, CO. Participate in 12month externship
Externship Information:

Other Doctorate (ScD) 2 FTE professional support staff (technicians/audiometric assistants) 3 FTE Clerical Support Staff Number of Audiology Students each year: 0 1st year AuD Clinical Rotations 0 2nd year 1 3rd year 1 4th year Externships Financial arrangements: Stipend Benefits Will interview travel be compensated?
No Vacation Days:
13 Continuing education opportunities? Yes Hearing aid manufacturers provide on site CEU training as well as travel to one off site training per year. May attend AAA and/or JDVAC conferences pending funding approval. Flexibility to attend local conferences with supervisor approval.

Yes Travel 45 miles to PFC James Dunn VAMC in Pueblo, CO Local students preferred: No Does the externship site provide orientation to relevant clinical policies and procedures? Yes Does the externship site provide instructions about patient's rights and providing patient education? Yes Does the externship site provide orientation to quality assessment, quality assurance and quality improvement? Yes Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
  • Superior customer service skills
  • Ability to function in busy clinic setting
  • Solid foundation in basic audiometry
  • Experience selecting, fitting and verifying hearing aids
  • Basic knowledge of site of lesion and electrophysiologic testing
  • Ability and willingness to ask questions and take instruction from multiple preceptors Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship:
  • Ability to work as part of a team and jump in wherever there is the greatest demand.
  • Ability to identify when it is appropriate and refer to other specialties when indicated.
  • Proficient in selecting, fitting, verifying and troubleshooting hearing aids and accessories from all (most) of the major manufacturers.
  • Evaluate and treat tinnitus patients.
  • Perform cochlear implant evaluations during specialty rotation
  • Perform CAPD evals
  • Ability to recommend a treatment plan based on the needs of the patient.

externship program How frequently will the externship site communicate with the university during the externship? As Needed Communication or other support do expected or required from the university during the externship: Reminders to complete any evaluations required by the university. Tools to complete student evaluations efficiently, e.g., Calipso or Typhon.
