Job Summary Serves as the advanced technical and operational leader for an assigned shift or department (e.g., Blood Bank, Under the direction of the Laboratory Director or Supervisor, coordinates daily workflows, oversees staff assignments, and ensures strict compliance with

CLIA '88

regulations, Florida Administrative Code (Rule 64B3), and facility protocols. Acts as the primary resource for complex troubleshooting, regulatory compliance, quality control management, and staff competency tracking while actively performing bench testing as required. Friday - Sunday 7 pm - 7 am shift.

Essential Functions Regulatory & Audit Readiness:

Ensures the department maintains constant readiness for unannounced CLIA and Florida Department of Health inspections. Collects, organizes, and reviews regulatory logs.

Quality Assurance Management:

Reviews daily and monthly quality control (QC) data. Identifies shifts or trends. Initiates corrective actions for out-of-range metrics. Validates new laboratory instruments and testing methodologies.

Proficiency Testing & Competency:

Coordinates mandatory proficiency testing (PT) events. Ensures samples are processed in accordance with CLIA rules. Assists in performing and documenting annual staff competency assessments.

Advanced Troubleshooting:

Resolves complex testing discrepancies, handles critical instrument failures beyond routine maintenance, and coordinates with manufacturer technical support for repairs.

Clinical Liaison & Conflict Resolution:

Serves as the primary laboratory contact for physicians and nursing supervisors during shifts. Manages disputes regarding sample rejections, critical value notifications, and emergency blood releases. Ensures all communications maintain a professional, collaborative tone.

Bench Operations:

Actively performs high-complexity manual and automated tests in licensed specialties alongside staff to maintain department turnaround times.

Qualifications & Licensure Requirements Education:

Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a chemical, physical, or biological science meeting CLIA requirements for high-complexity testing (42 CFR § 493.1489).

Experience:

Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical laboratory experience as a licensed Technologist, with demonstrated leadership or charge tech capabilities preferred.

Certification:

National certification (ASCP-MT/MLS, AMT-MT) required.

State Licensure:

Must hold an active, unencumbered State of Florida Clinical Laboratory Personnel License at the Technologist level (or higher) in the specialties overseen (e.g., Chemistry, Hematology, Immunohematology/Blood Bank, Serology, Microbiology). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Expert knowledge of CLIA quality control, validation, and documentation standards. Strong leadership, coaching, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to handle stressful, high-volume situations and resolve inter-departmental conflicts professionally. Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and hospital billing/ordering systems.
