MAJOR FUNCTION
The Wound and Ostomy Specialist
Educator assess, promotes, and contributes to the quality of nursing care administered to patients and their support systems throughout the health care continuum. The Wound and Ostomy Specialist
Educator functions within their trained scope of practice to address wound and/or ostomy needs, practicing in accordance with applicable state licensure requirements, organizational policies, and the standards established by the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society.
Specialization in wound and ostomy nursing practice includes in-depth study of relevant theories and scientific knowledge related to various patient populations, which promotes the ability to analyze and refine practice and generate increased nursing knowledge. The Wound and Ostomy Specialist
Educator must have the ability to use the nursing process including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation in formulating individualized plans of care, and must have the ability to supervise and educate others. The Wound and Ostomy Specialist
Educator perform the roles of expert clinician, educator, consultant, and researcher based on wound and ostomy clinical priorities and is responsible for designing, delivering, and evaluating outcomes linked to continuous improvement. The Wound and Ostomy Specialist
Educator must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate with medical providers and interdisciplinary teams to ensure evidence-based wound and ostomy practice is promoted. The Wound and Ostomy Specialist
Educator is knowledgeable of the latest wound and ostomy research trends enabling them to influence and empower staff to perform at the top of their license, motivate adoption of evidence-based practice changes, and facilitate adherence to organizational policies and procedures. The Wound and Ostomy Specialist
Educator may also serve as a preceptor to support the professional development of nursing staff and is responsible for contributing to organizational strategic plan goals through monitoring of quality data and staff performance.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's Degree required. Master's Degree preferred or actively working towards obtaining. Registered Nurse in NJ or compact state license. Minimum of three years clinical nurse experience.
Certification/Licensure:
National certification in area of specialty within 1 year of hire American Heart Association ACLS preferred. American Heart Association BLS required.
Knowledge & Skills:
Demonstrates role-modeling behavior through expert wound and ostomy care delivery, effective interpersonal communication, and commitment to evidence-based practice and professional development In-depth knowledge of wound etiology, pathophysiology, differential assessment, and staging per NPIAP pressure injury staging guidelines Competency in ostomy care includes preoperative stoma siting, pouching system selection, and management of stomal and peristomal complications Knowledge of WOCN Society clinical practice guidelines, NPIAP standards, and
CMS/AHRQ
regulatory requirements relevant to hospital-acquired conditions and reporting Proficiency in EHR documentation for wound and ostomy assessments, treatment plans, and quality outcome reporting
