Through partnership with Serve KY, the Kentucky Health Departments Association has been granted funding through the Federal AmeriCorps Agency to place AmeriCorps members in local health departments across the State of Kentucky. Members have a goal of increasing healthy outcomes of local communities and the program will also increase workforce in the public health field. AmeriCorps members have the opportunity to be trained and certified as Community Health Workers while serving in the four core programs identified under

Public Health Transformation:

WIC, HANDS, Harm Reduction and Health Education and Outreach. The Barren River District Health Department is searching for determined, ambitious individuals with a passion for public health. The BRDHD is currently accepting applicants for the AmeriCorps Kentucky Public Health program in an effort to increase participation in our core public health programs, focusing on Harm Reduction. Members will receive a Living Allowance of $14,280 (pre-tax) in installments during the term and an Education Award of $5,176 at the completion of the service term. This position will need to serve 1200 hours between Sept 1, 2026 - July 31, 2027 .

• Harm Reduction AmeriCorps Activities Direct Harm Reduction Support Assist staff during syringe service program hours (greeting participants, restocking supplies, providing educational materials) Prepare harm reduction kits (Narcan, safer injection kits, wound care kits, hygiene kits) Help distribute naloxone and provide basic overdose prevention education under supervision Maintain inventory of harm reduction supplies and track usage Support mobile outreach efforts in rural or underserved areas Education & Participant Engagement Provide participants with information on safer use, overdose prevention, and available community resources Help develop simple educational materials (flyers, handouts, social media content) Assist with one-on-one or small-group conversations about health, safety, and risk reduction Participate in community outreach events to raise awareness about harm reduction services Data & Program Operations Collect basic program data such as participant counts, supply distribution numbers, and referral tracking Assist with data entry, organization, and quality checks Help prepare summaries or visualizations for grant reporting or program evaluation Support documentation of outreach activities and participant interactions Community Partnerships & Collaboration Attend coalition meetings, community partner gatherings, or local health department events Help maintain communication with partner organizations (shelters, treatment centers, recovery groups, clinics) Assist with scheduling outreach activities or coordinating joint events Participate in community needs assessments related to substance use and harm reduction Field Work & OutreachJoin staff on street outreach or rural outreach trips Help distribute supplies and educational materials in community hotspots Participate in environmental scans to identify areas of need Assist with mapping community resources and high-risk locations Administrative & Support Tasks Organize harm reduction materials, storage areas, and outreach kits Assist with updating resource lists, referral guides, and contact sheets Draft simple reports, updates, or internal communications for the team Professional Development Shadow harm reduction staff, peer support specialists, CHWs, and outreach workers Attend trainings such as overdose response, trauma-informed care, stigma reduction, or Mental Health First Aid Learn about local public health systems, substance use trends, and harm reduction policies Participate in team meetings and program planning session The ideal Kentucky Public Health AmeriCorps member will have the following: A willingness to be a creative partner in their Local Health Department placement in order to find new ways to increase participation in HANDS, WIC, and Harm Reduction programs A positive and encouraging attitude A willingness to learn and implement best practices in the

Local Health Department Placement Eligibility Requirements:

to be placed in service with Kentucky Public Health AmeriCorps, members must: be 18 or over, must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien, and pass all required state and federal background checks.

• Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United State
• Must be 18 years of age or older
• Consent to and pass mandatory AmeriCorps background checks, including National Service Criminal History Check (NSCHC), NSOPW
• Must have a high school diploma, GED, or be working toward a diploma at the time of service
• Provide verification documents such as Driver's License, and Social Security Card
• Must have transportation to and from serve-site
