Mental Health Peer Specialist

Job Description

Peer Specialist To provide peer support services as part of a multi-disciplinary team to persons challenged by mental wellness. Service provision will focus on working with peers to enhance their recovery. Service is provided in individual and group setting primarily out in the community setting.
Personal traits which include:
patience, tolerance, caring, mature and understanding.
Required Qualifications/Skills:
  • NYS Driver's License
  • Ability to obtain Peer Certification from NYS within 90 days of employment
  • First hand understanding of issues related to living with wellness issues
  • Familiarity with services in Clinton County
  • Ability to work as a part of a team with other Peer Support workers and community providers/stakeholders
  • Honesty, integrity and ability to be compassionate towards individuals and families dealing with wellness issues,
  • Ability to use good judgement regarding confidentiality issues.
  • Ability to carry out the mission of NAMI Champlain Valley Position Duties Includes (not exclusive):
  • To provide individualized, ongoing guidance, coaching and support to peers.
  • To provide support to peers in the use of personal and community resources.
  • Assist peers in developing formal and informal community supports.
  • Assist peers in increasing social support networks.
  • To offer encouragement and support in times of crisis.
  • To advocate on behalf of peers with to protect the rights and to assist in reducing associated stigma.
  • To work in cooperation with other providers, family members or significant others involved in the peer's recovery.
