Position Summary Under the direct supervision of the Dental Director and Dental Manager, the Dental Hygienist provides preventive oral healthcare services, patient education, and clinical support to promote optimal oral health. This role is responsible for performing dental hygiene procedures, assessing patients' oral health, and collaborating with the dental team to ensure high-quality, compassionate patient care. The Dental Hygienist plays a vital role in improving patient outcomes while supporting efficient clinic operations. Key Responsibilities Perform comprehensive dental hygiene assessments, including reviewing medical and dental histories, conducting periodontal evaluations, and documenting findings. Provide preventive dental services, including prophylaxis (dental cleanings), periodontal maintenance, scaling and root planing, fluoride treatments, sealants, and desensitizing treatments as indicated. Expose, process, and evaluate diagnostic dental radiographs in accordance with state regulations and clinic protocols. Screen patients for signs of oral disease, including periodontal disease, oral cancer, and other abnormalities, and communicate findings to the dentist. Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, nutrition, tobacco cessation, and preventive dental care to promote long-term oral health. Develop individualized oral hygiene care plans based on each patient's needs and risk factors. Assist the dentist during examinations and treatment planning by providing clinical findings and recommendations. Accurately chart periodontal conditions, treatment provided, and patient progress in the electronic dental record. Maintain strict infection prevention and control standards by properly cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing instruments and equipment. Prepare and maintain treatment rooms to ensure a clean, organized, and efficient clinical environment. Monitor and maintain dental hygiene supplies, equipment, and instruments, reporting maintenance needs and assisting with inventory management. Support patient scheduling and workflow by ensuring timely completion of appointments and documentation. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, preventive health programs, and community outreach activities as assigned. Collaborate with dentists, dental assistants, and administrative staff to provide coordinated, patient-centered care. Maintain compliance with OSHA, CDC, HIPAA, and California Dental Practice Act regulations and all clinic policies and procedures. Promote a welcoming, respectful, and compassionate environment that supports patient comfort and satisfaction. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduation from an accredited Dental Hygiene program required. Current California Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) license in good standing required. Current CPR/BLS certification required. Local anesthesia and nitrous oxide certification (if applicable under California law) preferred. Experience providing preventive and periodontal dental hygiene services in a community health or clinical setting preferred. Proficiency in periodontal assessments, dental charting, radiography, and patient education. Knowledge of dental terminology, infection control standards, and current evidence-based dental hygiene practices. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to educate and motivate patients of all ages. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple patient appointments efficiently.
