A Dentist, Orthodontist, or Prosthodontist diagnoses and treats problems of the teeth, gums, and mouth, and helps patients maintain oral health. May work as a general practitioner, handling a variety of patient needs, or specialize in dental care for children. Other specializations include Periodontist (treats gums and the bones that support teeth), Endodontist (treats root canals and teeth that have been broken or knocked out), Orthodontist (straightens teeth), or Prosthodontist (replaces missing teeth with fixtures such as bridges or dentures). Specialists treat gum disease or perform surgery.
