Summary The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) supports the Director of Nursing in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Nursing Services department, ensuring quality care, regulatory compliance, and optimal staffing. This role plays a key part in supervising nursing staff, participating in care planning, and enhancing service delivery through collaboration with interdisciplinary teams. Success in this position means maintaining high standards of clinical performance, promoting a culture of safety and respect, and stepping into a leadership role when needed. As a vital member of the leadership team, the ADON helps shape the overall resident experience and drives excellence in long-term care outcomes. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, and managing the daily operations of the Nursing Services department. Interpret and communicate policies and procedures to nursing staff, ensuring consistent implementation and compliance. Participate in daily clinical meetings, census discussions, admission reviews, and resident care planning. Supervise and evaluate nursing staff performance; implement coaching, corrective action, or discipline when necessary. Promote compassionate, high-quality care by ensuring adequate staffing and general cleanliness in resident areas. Collaborate with physicians, consultants, and interdisciplinary team members to improve resident outcomes and care delivery. Monitor nursing schedules to ensure staffing aligns with resident needs, regulatory requirements, and budget. Participate in hiring, training, and termination of nursing personnel. Conduct rounds to observe residents and evaluate the quality of care. Lead or assist with in-service training to ensure staff competencies meet clinical and regulatory standards. Monitor and enforce infection control practices in accordance with current guidelines. Assist with department budgeting and supply cost oversight, including medical and central supply usage. Prepare for regulatory surveys, participate in mock inspections, and implement follow-up plans of correction as needed. Investigate and report incidents, resident concerns, and unusual occurrences to the Director of Nursing or Administrator. Monitor for and participate in the investigation of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation allegations. Communicate professionally with residents, families, medical providers, staff, and external agencies. Act as the nursing department's administrative leader in the absence of the Director of Nursing. Promote teamwork, safety, compliance, and a resident-centered culture within the facility. Provide direct nursing care when needed to ensure continuity of care. Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities and facility committees. Perform additional duties as assigned. Education and Experience Nursing degree from an accredited college or university is required. Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice is required. Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience in a hospital, nursing home, or related healthcare setting. Knowledge of nursing and medical practices, as well as federal and state regulations related to long-term care. Current CPR certification is required. Experience participating in regulatory surveys, QAPI activities, and compliance initiatives is preferred. Prior experience in staff scheduling, in-service training, and performance management is strongly preferred. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and clinical documentation systems is preferred. Strong communication skills and experience working with interdisciplinary teams, physicians, and family members is valued. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong working knowledge of nursing standards, clinical practices, and long-term care regulations. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and compliance guidelines effectively. Skilled in supervising, training, and evaluating nursing staff to ensure quality care and professional development. Proficient in organizing staffing schedules, conducting rounds, and overseeing resident care plans. Capable of managing and responding to resident incidents, complaints, and unusual occurrences with sound judgment. Effective at leading or participating in quality improvement initiatives, surveys, and corrective action planning. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with residents, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams. Detail-oriented with strong organizational, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Demonstrates professionalism, emotional resilience, and a calm demeanor in high-pressure situations. Able to use basic computer systems and electronic health records for documentation and reporting. Committed to promoting teamwork, resident dignity, safety, and a culture of compliance. Work Environment / Physical Demands The Assistant Director of Nursing works throughout the facility and in office settings, frequently moving between resident care areas and administrative spaces. The role requires the ability to push, pull, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and perform overhead lifting, as well as lift up to 25 pounds unassisted. The position involves standing and walking for extended periods and may include working beyond normal hours, including weekends, holidays, and during emergencies. The individual must be able to cope with emotionally stressful situations and communicate effectively with residents, families, staff, and medical professionals. Exposure to infectious waste, airborne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, odors, and various air contaminants is possible. The role may also involve responding to hostile or emotionally upset individuals. The ADON must meet facility health requirements, including medical clearances and immunization standards, and be capable of assisting with resident evacuation in emergency situations.
