Overview We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Director of Nursing to lead our nursing team in providing exceptional care to our residents. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in nursing home management, home health, and hospice care. The Director of Nursing (DON) leads the nursing team in our 49-bed rural skilled nursing facility and 18 assisted living apartments. This role is responsible for overseeing the delivery of high-quality care to our residents while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, policies, and best practices. The Director of Nursing plays a pivotal role in maintaining a positive and supportive environment for both staff and residents.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Management Lead, supervise, and support a team of nursing staff, including RNs, LPNs, TMA's CNAs, Medical Records and other healthcare personnel. Ensure effective staffing patterns, including recruitment, training, and retention of qualified nursing staff. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with policies and applicable laws. These responsibilities include interviewing, hiring/firing, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Promote a culture of teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement within the nursing department. Actively participate in staff meetings, care planning sessions, and other facility meetings as necessary. Collaborate with department heads and facility leadership to ensure smooth facility operations and resident care. In the absence of the Administrator make decisions pertinent to the operation of the facility.
Resident Care and Clinical Oversight:
Oversee and ensure the delivery of safe, quality nursing care to all residents in both the skilled nursing and assisted living areas. Including attending resident care conferences as needed. A mandated vulnerable adult reporter of maltreatment, neglect, abuse of vulnerable residents/tenants. Required to report and investigate any alleged maltreatment, neglect, or abuse to the administrator and appropriate state agencies. Monitor and evaluate the clinical care provided to residents, ensuring it meets individual needs and enhances their quality of life. Lead the care planning process, ensuring the development of individualized care plans and regular reviews. Oversee the proper management of nursing supplies and equipment.
Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance:
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including those related to nursing care, infection control, and resident safety. Lead the preparation for surveys and audits by regulatory bodies, ensuring the facility meets all required standards. Implement and monitor the quality assurance programs to continuously assess and improve care delivery. Address any deficiencies or concerns identified during surveys or audits in a timely and effective manner and implement an effective plan of correction.
Risk Management & Safety:
Ensure nursing staff follow infection control procedures and practice safe and effective care delivery. Manage emergency protocols, including disaster preparedness and crisis management. Oversee the facility's risk management program, addressing safety concerns and minimizing liability.
Financial and Budgetary Oversight:
Assist with the management of the nursing department's budget, ensuring the efficient use of resources while maintaining high-quality care standards. Oversee the proper management of nursing supplies and equipment.
Communication and Family Support:
Foster positive relationships with residents, families, and visitors. Provide guidance and support to families regarding resident care, treatment plans, and progress. Communicate effectively with other departments, including administration, social services, and dietary, to ensure holistic care for residents.
Communication & Reporting:
Facilitate clear communication between nursing staff, physicians, residents, families, and other interdisciplinary team members. Report and address any safety or quality issues promptly, escalating to the executive team as needed. Attend and contribute to meetings, including quality assurance committees, staffing, and leadership team meetings.
Qualifications:
Education:
Registered Nurse (RN) with a current, unencumbered license in the state of Minnesota Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nursing or Healthcare Administration preferred Current CPR certification
Experience:
Prior experience in a skilled nursing facility or assisted living setting preferred, with at least 2 years in a leadership role. Strong understanding of nursing standards, regulations, and compliance issues. Experience with care planning, quality assurance, and staff development.
Skills and Abilities:
Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with staff, residents, and families. Knowledge of financial management. Ability to make sound clinical decisions in a fast-paced environment. Proficient in electronic health records (EHR) and other relevant software with strong computer/technology skills. Perform other related duties as directed by the
Administrator Working Conditions:
Full-time position with on-call responsibilities as needed. Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required. Work is performed in a healthcare facility environment with exposure to infectious diseases, medical equipment, and long-term care patients.
