INTRODUCTION
YouthPoint Health (formerly Daly City Youth Health Center) was established in 1990 and has prepared our communities' teens and young adults for a healthy and productive adulthood. The Health Center is a school-linked program of the Jefferson Union High School District in collaboration with a medical clinic operated by the San Mateo Medical Center. The Health Center provides free, confidential and culturally sensitive primary medical care, mental health counseling, and health education to adolescents aged 12-24 years of age. Project PLAY (Peer Leadership Alternatives for Youth) is the Health Center's teen pregnancy prevention program and has two main initiatives: (1) comprehensive sexuality education; and (2) peer health education training. Project PLAY was established in 1996.
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Under the direction of the PLAY Program Manager and with the support of the Peer Coordinator, the Health Educator provides outreach, program recruitment, sexual health education, clinical services linkage and referrals to teens and their families as outlined by current and relevant grants. These services are for teens attending the schools in the Jefferson Union High School District (JUHSD), other local schools and service sites who are at risk for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare and implement 10 hour sexual health education curriculum to JUHSD classrooms.
Provide information on pregnancy and STI/HIV prevention methods at schools and other service sites.
Facilitate Sex Ed Squad (peer health education) programs at JUHSD High Schools.
Collaborate with Peer Coordinator to train and prepare Squad members for health education presentations. Facilitate and support student leadership in Sex Ed Squad.
Assist with recruitment of Sex Ed Squad members through multiple modalities (presentations, announcements, assemblies, etc.).
Lead Squad members in workshops and presentation at various conferences and community events
Assist with planning and implementation of health education related events.
Create, modify, and implement curriculum materials.
Collect, compile, review, and enter accurately all presentations and activities, for grants and program evaluation purposes.
Serve as a liaison between the schools, Youth Health Center, other project staff and collaborative agencies.
Refer teens at schools and other service sites to clinical services and other resources.
Give presentations about the programs and its activities in the schools and community.
Adhere to guidelines and organizational policies and procedures.
Attend staff meetings, team meetings, and other program meetings on a weekly or monthly basis.
Collaborate with behavioral health, medical, development, and administrative teams on projects relating to PLAY and overall Youth Health Center's mission.
Other duties as assigned by the Program Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
B.A or B.S in Health Education, Psychology, Social Work, Human Sexuality, Education or related field or at least 5 years of experience providing community and/or street outreach and health education in communities with diverse cultural backgrounds.
Minimum of 3 years of experience with providing health education in school settings and/or community health centers
Minimum of 3 years of experience with working with at-risk adolescents of all ethnic backgrounds in school settings or in agencies providing similar services
Passionate about the Health Center's mission
Well-organized and efficient
Experience with classroom management
Flexible and team oriented
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrate sound judgment and professionalism
Must have reliable vehicle and valid CA Driver's License
Knowledge of STI/HIV, teen pregnancy, sexual health and educational issues is a plus
Ability to work well with people in a variety of work settings
Must have desire to be a part of a team-oriented, committed, caring, fun community.
Pay:
$21.94 - $38.50 per hour
