Job Description

Job Summary The Lactation Consultant RN works on a team that provides one-on-one rounding of mothers and infants, seven days a week excluding holidays. The Lactation Consultant supports patients in SCN, Newborn Nursery, Post-partum, Labor and Delivery, Recovery Room, Intensive Care Unit, Rehab Care Unit, and Medical/Surgical units. This role assists in teaching breastfeeding classes as part of the Childbirth Education Program, inpatient and outpatient consults, and phone assistance with the Lactation Resource Line. Job Responsibilities Conduct bedside lactation rounds daily. Ensure the Standards of Care, Standards of Practice, Standards of Competency, Nurse Practice Act, Standards of Excellence, TeamSTEPPS, and follow all nursing policies and procedures on the nursing unit. Will provide direct patient care at least 50% of the time. Assist surgeon in OR with second scrub duties as needed Assist post-partum nurses with call lights/PRN medications as needed Provide phone assistance with Lactation Resource Line. Follow up phone calls to all post-partum patients. Consults with mothers with breastfeeding problems. Conduct follow-up phone calls to all post-partum patients (including high risk). Communicates to physicians' concerns related to breastfeeding Select appropriate breastfeeding related supplies for hospital usage. Conduct quality assurance programs to monitor the caliber of the program. Collaborate with the Women's Boutique and pump rental services. Ensure proper procedures followed for Milk Depot and maintain open communication with Milk Bank regarding donor milk. A Provide an annual lactation in-service for staff. Educate/orient all new staff on lactation. Network with breastfeeding support services within the community and monitor processes for opportunities for improvement and quality assurance. Create an environment that promotes learning for staff and patients. Maintain the employee lactation support room Carries out other duties as assigned
Education Requirements Minimum:
Degree in Nursing with Licensure in Indiana and Certified as a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Or, Indiana Registered Nurse enrolled in Certification course as a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) to be completed within six (6) months of hire.

Experience Reqirements Minimum:
One (1) years' experience in Women's and Children's Health, three (3) or more years' experience with Lactation education and support, demonstrates ability to organize, manage and support a Lactation Program.
Preferred:
Three (3) years' experience in Women's and Children's Health, five (5) years' experience Lactation education and support, demonstrates ability to organize, manage and develop a Lactation Program.
License / Certification
Requirements BLS (American Heart Association) IBCLC within six (6) months of hire into the position NRP withing six (6) months of hire into the position Registered Nursing license valid to practice in the state of Indiana
