Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society (MRFRS) Medical Care Coordinator Job Overview MRFRS is seeking a skilled, compassionate, and highly organized Medical Care Coordinator to oversee the day-to-day medical care of all cats in our custody, both onsite and in foster homes. This role is ideal for an experienced veterinary professional who thrives in a dynamic shelter environment and is dedicated to delivering timely, high-quality, and compassionate care. The Medical Care Coordinator works closely with the Shelter Manager, shelter veterinarian, staff, foster caregivers, and external veterinary providers to ensure every cat receives appropriate, well-documented medical attention in accordance with established protocols. What You'll Do Oversee and coordinate medical care for all cats in MRFRS care, including those housed onsite and in foster homes Monitor and track vaccinations, preventatives, medications, treatments, and other medical needs to ensure care and follow-up are completed accurately and on time Respond promptly to medical concerns reported by staff, volunteers, and foster caregivers; assess urgency within established protocols and coordinate veterinary care as appropriate Provide routine treatments and medical care within training and qualifications, and ensure veterinary treatment plans and instructions are clearly communicated, implemented, and documented Assists with spay/neuter surgeries from induction through recovery. Serve as the designated on-call medical resource for foster caregivers and facilitate appropriate veterinary or emergency care when needed Maintain accurate and current medical records and communicate significant medical concerns or changes in condition to the Shelter Manager and veterinary team Collaborate with the Shelter Manager and shelter veterinarian to develop, implement, and maintain medical policies, protocols, and standards of care. Maintain medical supplies and medication inventory, ensuring proper storage, organization, labeling, and documentation Provide training and guidance to staff, volunteers, and foster caregivers regarding routine medical care, medication administration, recognition of illness, and established medical protocols Provide knowledgeable and compassionate customer service to shelter visitors and adopters, including assisting during adoption hours as needed and communicating clearly about cats' medical needs and MRFRS policies Ability and willingness to work a regular Sunday-Thursday schedule, including participation in regularly scheduled clinics Participate in outcome decision-making when euthanasia is being considered, working with the Shelter Manager and appropriate veterinary team and following established MRFRS policies and protocols. Advocates for the individual cat's welfare and helps ensure decisions are humane, medically appropriate, and consistent with organizational policy and standards of care. Essential Clinical Skills Strong knowledge of shelter medicine principles, including population health, infectious disease prevention and management, vaccination protocols, sanitation, and the unique medical considerations of high-density feline populations Ability to recognize changes in condition, prioritize medical concerns, and appropriately escalate cases requiring veterinary care Experience providing routine treatments and implementing veterinary treatment plans Familiarity with medical record-keeping and controlled substance/inventory management Competence in low-stress, Fear Free handling techniques Experience with anesthesia induction, monitoring, and recovery.
