Director of Clinical Operations Salary range: $110 - 150k dependent upon experience
Location:
Rockville, MD.
Reports To:
CEO, Managing Partners and holders.
Direct Reports:
3 Clinical Managers (with oversight of ~30 clinical staff) About the Role We are seeking an experienced Director of Clinical Operations to lead clinical service delivery across our 6-office ophthalmology practice . This role is responsible for the operational performance, quality, and consistency of clinical care delivered by 18 physicians and a clinical support team of approximately 30 staff members , including Ophthalmic Technicians, Scribes, Opticians, and other allied clinical personnel. The ideal candidate is a hands-on operational leader with deep ophthalmology experience who has successfully managed clinical operations across multiple sites and led sizable teams. Key Responsibilities Clinical Operations Leadership Oversee day-to-day clinical operations across all 6 office locations, ensuring consistent, high-quality patient care and efficient clinic flow Partner with physicians to align clinical workflows with provider needs and patient volume Standardize clinical protocols, staffing models, and best practices across all sites Team Leadership & Development Directly manage and mentor 3 Clinical Managers, who in turn oversee clinical staff at each site Provide leadership, coaching, and performance management across the broader clinical team (Ophthalmic Technicians, Scribes, Opticians, and other support staff) Lead recruitment, onboarding, and training initiatives to build a strong, scalable clinical team Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement Multi-Site Operations Management Monitor and manage clinical staffing levels, scheduling, and coverage across all 6 offices Identify and resolve operational bottlenecks affecting patient throughput and provider efficiency Ensure consistent implementation of policies, procedures, and clinical standards practice-wide Quality, Compliance & Performance Ensure compliance with all applicable healthcare regulations, OSHA, HIPAA, and ophthalmology-specific clinical standards Monitor key operational and clinical performance metrics (patient flow, wait times, staff productivity, patient satisfaction) and drive improvement initiatives Support audits, accreditation requirements, and quality assurance programs Strategic & Cross-Functional Collaboration Collaborate with practice leadership on growth initiatives, new site openings, and resource planning Partner with HR, Finance, and Administration to support budgeting, staffing plans, and operational goals Serve as a key liaison between clinical staff, physicians, and executive leadership Required Qualifications Minimum of 5+ years of ophthalmology practice experience (clinical operations, practice management, or related leadership role) Proven experience managing a multi-site practice with at least 3 locations Demonstrated experience directly or indirectly supervising 20+ employees Strong knowledge of ophthalmic clinical roles and workflows (Ophthalmic Technicians, Scribes, Opticians) Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills Ability to travel regularly between office locations Strong understanding of healthcare compliance standards (HIPAA, OSHA) Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience) Certification such as COE (Certified Ophthalmic Executive) or similar Experience with EHR systems commonly used in ophthalmology practices Background in change management or practice growth/expansion What We Offer Competitive salary commensurate with experience [
