Job Description

CMDHD is seeking a Full-Time (1.0 FTE / 80 hours per pay) position for a Hearing and Vision Technician within Isabella County. This candidate will provide vision and hearing screening of pre-school and school-age children and youth throughout Central Michigan District Health Department. Duties include traveling to schools, documentation of screening results, referrals for medical evaluation and follow-up. Will assist parents in accessing appropriate care and resources for their children. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent combined with experience working with children preferred. Must be able to interact positively with children, parents, teachers, school administrators, health practitioners and members of the general public from a broad range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Must be able to successfully complete Michigan Department of Health and Human Services training and pass the examination for certification as a Public Health Vision and Public Health Hearing Technician. Must possess basic computer literacy. One year experience as a clerk/technician desired. Full benefits, including health/life/dental insurances, 12 vacation and 12 paid sick leave days with an additional 3 ½ paid days of personal time per year, 15 paid holidays, and MERS defined contribution retirement with up to 10% employer contribution. Mileage reimbursed at the standard federal rate.
General Summary :
Under the general direction of the Community Health Director and Supervisor, the Hearing and Vision Technician is directly involved in the screening of children for the detection of possible vision impairment, hearing and/or speech problems. This is a certified, paraprofessional classification that is not responsible for the supervision of other Department employees, but may instructor consult with school personnel and may assist in field training of new technicians. A Technician must exercise considerable skill in working with children, other employees, schools, and the general public. This position participates in the maintenance of related client and program activity records and prepares required reports. Hearing and Vision Technicians exercise considerable independent judgment in decision-making, time management, is skilled in representing the agency in the community, and in implementing public health programs.
Essential Duties :
Coordinates and plans effective and timely schedules of hearing and vision testing with multiple pre-schools, schools, or defined populations. Conducts vision and/or hearing screening of pre-school or school-aged children. Interprets screening results and identifies children with normal or serviceable hearing and vision, or those with potential hearing or vision problems. Accurately records test results, and reports to school staff and parents. Enters data into electronic health records and State database according to established procedures. Makes recommendations and referrals for further examinations for children with hearing or vision problems based on State guidelines. Sends appropriate notification of results and follow-up letters to providers and/or parents according to established procedures. Assists in testing and/or follow up of children needing further evaluation. Follows up with school staff and parents regarding any failed tests and updates records accordingly. Disseminates education and informational resources as needed. Ensures screening equipment is in working order and properly calibrated. Maintains current knowledge of State program policies and protocols and ensures effective compliance and adherence to quality standards and program requirements. Attends required continuing education workshops, and agency meetings and trainings. Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in response to emergencies, workloads or staffing shortages. Works flexible hours as needed.
Other Duties & Responsibilities :
May complete special projects such as data compiling and entry, filing, mailing, copying, and so forth as requested. Participates in Emergency Preparedness Incident Command System (ICS) as assigned. Maintains up-to-date vaccines including flu (influenza,) in accordance with CDC guidelines: Recommended Vaccines for Healthcare Workers, in which you allow CMDHD to access your current immunization status based on Michigan Improvement Care Registry (MCIR).
Minimum Qualifications :
Ability to read, write and calculate at a level normally acquired through completion of high school. Successful completion of comprehensive training courses, including practicums, with all ages of children. Knowledge of public health and ability to enter and access information in electronic health record at a level normally acquired through one to two years related experience. Reliable transportation with valid Michigan driver's license and current certificate of insurance to travel to school sites, or other locations for work, training or meetings. Ability to plan and schedule own work, accomplish assigned tasks in accordance with established standards, and multi-task. Interpersonal and communications skills necessary to effectively engage children and keep on task, and to gather and exchange information with school personnel, providers and parents. Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on screening equipment. Completion of National Incident Management System/Incident Command System online and face-to-face training courses based on current Public Health Emergency Preparedness requirements.

Environment & Effort :
Works in clean, temperature-controlled school or office settings. Some exposure to adverse weather conditions and hazards when traveling to schools or other locations. Exposure Control - Category B. At lower risk for occupational percutaneous or mucosal exposure to blood or body fluids. Per OSHA's Blood borne Pathogens standard requirements, CMDHD protects the employee by an established exposure control plan which includes but is not limited to use of universal precautions, engineering controls, work practice controls, personal protective equipment, and worker training. Performance of essential duties requires speaking, hearing, and repetitive motions (typing/data entry.) Physical effort: sedentary work requiring lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and using minimum force to lift, carry, or move objects such as files and testing equipment.
Visual effort:
constantly required in viewing equipment and computer displays, and reading forms and charts.

constant interruptions, and continual review and verification of data and information, and investigating and following up on questions or documentation errors.
