POSITION OVERVIEW
Responsible for completion of automated newborn hearing screens on newborns, education of families pertaining to the relevance of hearing screening and early intervention and recording patient demographics and hearing screening results. Hearing screening(s) should be conducted prior to patient discharge supporting patient care goals and objectives.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
:
Prioritize newborns to be screened for hearing loss prior to discharge from hospital based upon established protocol.
Factors considered include:
o Time of birth o Newborn's state and ideal time for screen o Estimated discharge time, ensuring that length of stay (LOS) is not prolonged for hearing screening o Need for subsequent screening prior to discharge
Verify insurance information with family using facesheet and enter in hearing screen device and Hearts for Hearing Electronic Medical Record, if applicable
Perform automated hearing screen in family's room unless NICU/Special Care newborn
Educate the family regarding newborn hearing screening procedures and answer family questions prior to, during, and following screen
Obtain a list of risk factors for hearing loss, if indicated, based on medical history from hospital personnel, strictly following established protocols and procedures
Document hearing screen results in newborn's electronic medical record, if applicable, and in newborn hearing screen log book
Follow established infection control procedures and hospital policies and procedures
Recognize problems with screening equipment, troubleshoot as necessary and report any recurrent or unresolved problems to Newborn Hearing Screen Coordinator or Director of Newborn Hearing Screen and/or technical support
Report any concerns regarding newborn to hospital personnel
Monitor inventory of supplies, restock supplies as needed, and report supply needs to Newborn Hearing Screen Coordinator or Director of Newborn Hearing Screen
Collect facesheets for reference and file in locked cabinet for Newborn Hearing Screen Coordinator or Director of Newborn Hearing Screen
On call on days scheduled
Attend new employee orientation and if required, hospital orientation
Maintain hospital vendor requirements
Other duties and projects as assigned by management
