Job Description

JOB TITLE
HISTOLOGY
TECHNICIAN SUMMARY
Under general supervision, prepares histologic slides from skin tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Dermatopathologist. The Histology Technician is a detailed oriented individual who can perform all complex aspects of histology including staining protocols, embedding, grossing, computer data entry and laboratory equipment and inventory maintenance.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepares sections of skin tissue for immediate examination, using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to cut, mount, and stain tissue specimens. Prepares slides or specimens, using special cutting and specified stain, to enhance visibility under microscope. Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by pathologist; maintains and troubleshoots delicate electronic histological equipment. Performs computerized data entry of all work performed including logging in and processing of specimen tissues in the laboratory and generates reports as required. Maintains equipment and a running inventory of supplies in a clean and sterile condition, to avoid contamination of reagents and solutions. Maintains all histologic manuals in the laboratory; recommends and develops new services, projects, and procedures. Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards. Ensures strict confidentiality of all records. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
High School Graduate or Equivalent.
Florida License/Certification:
HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP).
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Knowledge of rapid tissue processing and frozen section techniques. Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures. Ability to prepare slides and/or specimens for microscopic examination using established protocols and techniques. Ability to utilize, troubleshoot and maintain computerized laboratory and/or histological equipment. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards. Ability to work with distressing and/or unpleasant odors, procedures and circumstances. Ability to process computer data and to format and generate reports. Ability to develop and maintain record-keeping systems and procedures. Ability to gather, verify data input, correct errors and prepare reports. Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Ability to orient and train selected staff when necessary. Organizing resources and establishing priorities skills.
