In this role, you will be responsible for the receipt, identification, accessioning and processing of clinical specimens at ODX's laboratory location in Farmington Hills, Michigan. This position is dual-skilled and will require your flexibility to fill in at various locations throughout the state to support our specimen collection team. Float assignments are made based on operational need and are a standing expectation of the position, not an occasional exception. Candidates should be comfortable moving between the two functions — sometimes within the same shift — and between a variety of locations. Responsibilities Accessioning and Specimen Processing Receive specimens from couriers, patient service centers, inpatient units, and client offices; verify each specimen is accompanied by a complete, legible requisition. Confirm patient identity using two unique identifiers and reconcile specimen labels against the requisition and the order in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Accession specimens into the LIMS, generating accession numbers and labels; enter or verify demographic, insurance, ordering provider, and test order information with a high degree of accuracy. Evaluate specimens against established acceptance and rejection criteria. Document and escalate discrepancies per policy, and initiate recollection requests when required. Sort and distribute specimens to the appropriate testing departments. Prepare, package, and document referral specimens for send-out to reference laboratories. Answer telephone inquiries from clients, nursing units, and providers regarding specimen requirements, collection instructions, and order status; route clinical questions appropriately. Phlebotomy and Float Coverage Perform venipuncture and capillary collection on patients across the age spectrum served by the assigned site. Verify patient identity, confirm test orders, explain the procedure, and address patient concerns in a calm, professional manner prior to collection. Select appropriate collection devices and follow correct order of draw, fill volumes, and mixing requirements. Label all specimens at the point of collection in the presence of the patient, including collector initials, date, and time. Collect blood cultures using aseptic technique; instruct patients on the proper collection of urine, stool, and other patient-collected specimens. Manage difficult draws appropriately, including recognizing when to escalate after unsuccessful attempts per policy. Recognize and respond to adverse reactions such as syncope, hematoma formation, and excessive bleeding; initiate first aid and notify appropriate personnel. Report to assigned float locations on time and prepared, adapting to site-specific workflows, equipment, and client expectations. All assignments Maintain competency in both functions through ongoing training and periodic competency assessment. Follow all standard operating procedures and comply with CLIA, COLA and other applicable state and federal regulations. Protect patient privacy and safeguard protected health information in accordance with HIPAA. Complete all assigned annual training, competency assessments, and health screening requirements on schedule. Report safety concerns, near misses, and specimen events promptly. Meticulous attention to detail, with a demonstrated commitment to correct patient and specimen identification. Strong sense of urgency and the ability to prioritize competing tasks during high-volume periods without sacrificing accuracy. Flexibility and composure when reassigned to a different site, workflow, or function on short notice. Professional, service-oriented interaction with patients, clients, providers, and coworkers. Sound judgment about when to act independently and when to escalate. Ability to work productively both as part of a processing team and independently at a draw site.

Qualifications Required:

High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program or equivalent documented experience performing venipuncture in a clinical setting. Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel between assigned sites. Basic computer proficiency and accurate data entry skills. Ability to read, understand, and follow detailed written procedures. One or more years of experience in a hospital, reference, or high-volume outpatient laboratory. Demonstrated understanding of healthcare compliance, HIPAA and clinical specimen collection protocols Excellent communication, organizational, and documentation skills Computer proficiency and ability to work with laboratory management systems

Preferred:
