About the
Role:
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) in the Gastrointestinal (GI) Clinic plays a critical role in supporting physicians and healthcare professionals by providing comprehensive clinical and administrative assistance. This position ensures the smooth operation of the GI clinic by preparing patients for examinations, assisting with procedures, and managing patient records with accuracy and confidentiality. The CMA acts as a liaison between patients and providers, delivering compassionate care and clear communication to enhance patient experience and outcomes. Additionally, the role involves maintaining a safe and clean clinical environment, adhering to all regulatory and safety standards. Ultimately, the CMA contributes to the efficient delivery of specialized GI healthcare services, supporting both patient care and clinic workflow excellence.
Minimum Qualifications:
Current certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA) from an accredited organization such as NHA, AMT, NCCT, etc. High school diploma or equivalent required;
Preferred Qualifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Completion of an accredited medical assistant program preferred. Minimum of one year experience working in a clinical setting, preferably in gastroenterology or a related specialty. Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and standard office software. Experience specifically in a GI clinic or endoscopy center. Additional certifications such as Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) or EKG Technician certification. Familiarity with GI-specific procedures and terminology. Strong background in patient education and counseling related to gastrointestinal health.
Responsibilities:
Prepare patients for GI examinations and procedures by taking vital signs, recording medical histories, and explaining processes to ensure patient comfort and understanding. Assist physicians during endoscopic and other GI procedures by handling instruments, monitoring patient status, and documenting procedural details accurately. Manage patient scheduling, maintain electronic health records, and ensure all documentation complies with HIPAA and clinic policies. Perform routine clinical tasks such as specimen collection, administering medications as directed, and maintaining inventory of medical supplies. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care, communicate test results, and provide patient education on GI health and post-procedure care.

The Certified Medical Assistant utilizes clinical skills daily to prepare patients and assist with GI procedures, ensuring safety and comfort throughout. Strong communication skills are essential for effectively educating patients and coordinating with healthcare teams. Proficiency in electronic health records allows for accurate documentation and efficient management of patient information. Organizational skills help maintain clinic workflow, manage appointments, and ensure medical supplies are stocked. Preferred skills such as phlebotomy and EKG administration enhance the ability to provide comprehensive patient care within the GI specialty.
